Well you can send the feedback to Microsoft through the feedback tool. I am sure they would like to receive that since many of their users might have the same feedback.

I want the sidebar back, I think to remove the option in W7 is foolish. A lot of people like it and have uses for it! We should at least have the option to use it or not.

I'm missing my friend the sidebar

I notice the files are still there, but I cant get it to run. I have had a quick play trying to move the vista files over and that doesn't work either.

Anybody had any luck getting it running or can point me to a substitute.

I miss being able to bring the gadgets up with Winkey+Space

They really should have options to hide or show the sidebar

Don't know how this may help, but it might!

Adding Vista Sidebar and Aero to Windows Server 2008 Desktop

Do the following steps in your target Windows Server 2008 x64 box.

    To get the sidebar,

    1. From a Vista SP1 x64, copy in the content of C:\Program Files\Windows Sidebar. And place the folder in the same location.
    2. Run sidebar.exe /regserver
    3. Register (regsvr32) the 2 sidebar dlls, sbdrop.dll and wlsrvc.dll
    4. Clone the sidebar registry settings of the Vista box, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Sidebar\Settings, to the target Windows Server 2008 registry.
    5. Run C:\Program Files\Windows Sidebar\Sidebar.exe to bring up the sidebar and set the properties to start Siderbar when Windows starts.

Now to get the Aero, assuming your graphic card is sufficient

    1. In Server Manager, add Desktop Experience feature.
    2. In Services applet, set the service, Themes, to autostart.
    3. In Personalization, set Theme to Windows Vista and Windows Colors and Appearance to Aero.

Then spend the next hour to add/remove all the gadgets you like/dislike, which is the fun part.

    Windows Sidebar… or lack thereof…

The sidebar has been integrated with Windows Explorer in the sense that there is no actual “sidebar” for the gadgets to attach to. Rather, they float around on the desktop and can be snapped to the sides or the top or bottom of the screen, which is great. But, in case your wondering, at this point the gadgets are still hosted by the Windows Sidebar process, which can be located at %ProgramFiles%\Windows Sidebar and %ProgramFiles(x86)%\Windows Sidebar (32-bit version of the sidebar when using 64-bit Windows).

There’s also one gadget missing that was included with Windows Vista, which is the notes gadget. You can however, port this gadget over from Vista. Just make sure to either put it in C:\Program Files\Windows Sidebar\Shared Gadgets or your user specific gadgets folder. Putting gadgets in C:\Program Files\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets will NOT work.

I've had the sidebar turned off almost from Day 1 of Vista, so I'll never miss it.

    NormCameron,

Thats taking the long way to recover the sidebar...Just replace the existing sidebar files with Vista`s ones and it brings back the old sidebar instantly

    No more sidebar? WHAT?

I was using sidebar since vista, and I can't live without. But what, in Win 7 it disappear? Did MS really think that a desktop or always on top gadget can areplace the sidebar? if I maximize my windows, with the sidebar the window go near the bar, not over or below it. We can't do this in Win7, and this is very bad. So I was searching for a solution, like "hack" the vista files and copy then to 7, and I found something very better than this. I discovered that there is a sidebar in Google Desktop, so I decided to completely remove all gadgets I was using from MS, and switch to the google sidebar gadget (part of google desktop engine - only disable all indexing options if you only want the sidebar). the sidebar offer the option to put gadgets on the sidebar OR on the desktop (listen to this MS, offer the CHOICE is not a bad thing)... and you can resize the gadgets and the sidebar, so the bar is even better than the vista original one. Very bad decision MS to remove the sidebar. Long live to google sidebar. Win 7 will certainly make the google sidebar increase in popularity.
