HawkEye ShellInit may be worth looking at. It will allow the user to reverse-apportion a section of the screen. I used it in XP to create a 72 pixel band at the bottom of the screen for a RainMeter skin. My desktop resolution automatically adjusted to 1920x1008 and 1920x1128.

You could use it to create space on either side of the screen for your gadgets.

    Maybe. I haven't run it in 7.

OK. It works - as far as creating the space.

I do not feel like playing with it to create a space large enough for gadgets. So, test it.

    Here is a sample script.

    destroy margin, 0
    margin, 0, bottom, 72

    - Hawkeye ShellInit -
    - Freeware by Hakeye Technologies -

    -----------------------------------------------

Hawkeye ShellInit is a small, scriptable application that
    * Creates any number of margins on the screen that maximized windows wont cover (much like the taskbar).
In these margins, you can put applications that you always want visible, for instance Winamp, SysMeter,
    console, chat window, or whatever.
    * Runs applications so it can timely position them or make them transparent.
    * Positions and resizes windows based on window caption or classname. This makes it simple to place the applications
you want in the margin area. (Windows has a tendency to move windows out of the margin area because
it's trying to reserve that space for the appbar (toolbar) that it thinks is there.)
    * Makes windows transparent based on window caption or classname. Any level between 0 (totally transparent)
and 255 (totally visible) can be used. Only available in 2k and XP.
    * Toggles windows "always on top".

    * Doesn't require you to keep it running after you run the script.

I understand where you are going with this, now. There are a whole slew of such posts / request all over the Internet - unfortunately, according to Windows 7 help:

    What happened to Windows Sidebar?

Windows Sidebar isn't included in this version of Windows. Instead, you can display gadgets on your desktop. For more information, see Desktop gadgets: frequently asked questions.
The only thing I can see is to try to figure out how to get the sidebar.exe from Vista installed and working on your Windows 7 install.

I guess you had missed my posts. And that link you gave doesn't work in either browser for me.

From what I have read I need sidebar.exe to get the Vista style sidebar working on Win 7. Is this correct? I am using Win 7 64 bit. Do I need sidebar.exe from Vista 64? If so I don't have it. I was running Vista 32 bit and I did a fresh install to a new disk. If I need sidebar.exe from Vista 64 can someone please send it to me.

Thanks for the help all. It works, kinda. I followed the directions and the sidebar works. I added the gadgets I had running before the sidebar change and they work. However I am having a problem installing new gadgets. Whatever gadget I try to download and install I receive an "unspecified error" message. Any ideas?

I am trying this; ALAS, it's been so long since I took ownership that I don't remember how I did it, the taking full control would be the easy part. I was stuck it laptops and since they were on windows 8 before I got one, I have been at the control of Microsoft . . . upgrade it to 10 and hated it . . . went right back to 8 after one look. Know where I can find refresher on the taking ownership?
