ANN: Classic Shell - start menu and other features

Hi Ivo,
I tried the move to Windows 7 recently, and was horrified by the stupid GUI changes. I was about to give up and return to Windows XP when I found out about Classic Shell, which solves many of the issues with Win7, and better lets us choose what you want to keep or not.
So, Many thanks for your work.

I reinstall my system frequently, so one of the good things about classic Shell is that it integrates many things together, so after we install Windows we can get Classic Shell to fix most of it alone.
However one of the things Classic Shell does not fix is line spacing in Explorer, especially in Detail View, that is the one I always use.
I found this thread that fixes it, but is not an easy process, as we have to Resource Hack one DLL:

Do you think you could integrate this in Classic Shell?

No, sorry. Classic Shell is designed for run-time features, not for off-line tweaks like registry or DLL hacks.

I can recommend making a backup of your system after you set it up, so you can easily reimage it as frequently as you like.

First off - superb program! Loved Windows 7 from day one but the start menu's behaviour was driving me insane, with the traditional view being snatched away by Microsoft.

I have shortcuts to Desktop and Control Panel in Classic Shell's start menu and they both expand fine. I just have some additional sub-menus appearing under the desktop one and am wondering where CS is retrieving these from, and if they could be hidden? Better shown as an illustration:



I've had a quick look in ShellEx but will probably break something if I mess with desktop hooks.

Can you elaborate? Which ones do you believe should not be there? BTW, when you open Explorer, doesn't it show the same items under Desktop?

I suppose drives (my computer), network and trashcan make sense, as they sit as special links on the desktop - but not sure where CS is retrieving my username folder, homegroup or libraries from.

If I open this folder from C:\Users\<my username>\Desktop none of those are there. Had a good look in the public/default user folders too, no sign of them.

No, don't open C:\Users\...
In Explorer look at the root item called "Desktop". Under it you'll see your user files, Network, Libraries, etc.

Aha! Yes I see them now. I use Xplorer² for day to day operations, and without a tree view so missed them.

I tried to do it, but there were problems. Middle click is used by Windows 7 for other purposes and it got confused. I'll look into it again when I have time.
