LOL thanks
LOL thanks
@cleftangels what's lol about my question? And what are you talking about different registry?
Hi sorry took so long to get back. I lol'd because there always has to be someone with a problem.... Well today I joined you with the same problem. I got a new laptop with win 7 ultimate x64 preinstalled ran my little fix AND IT DID NOT WORK......
But I found out why quick enought see below:
Needs to be changed. In the 64bit you have two programfile directories. the second one is "C:\Program Files (x86)"Code:Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SharedDLLs] "C:\\Program Files\\Common Files\\Adobe\\Shell\\psicon.dll"=dword:00000001 [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.psd\ShellEx] [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.psd\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}] @="{0B6DC6EE-C4FD-11d1-819A-00C04FB69B4D}" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{0B6DC6EE-C4FD-11d1-819A-00C04FB69B4D}] @="Photoshop Icon Handler" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{0B6DC6EE-C4FD-11d1-819A-00C04FB69B4D}\InProcServer32] @="C:\\Program Files\\Common Files\\Adobe\\Shell\\psicon.dll" "ThreadingModel"="Apartment"
the dll file needs to go in that programfiles directory and the reg file needs to reflect this change also
CheersCode:Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SharedDLLs] "C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Common Files\\Adobe\\Shell\\psicon.dll"=dword:00000001 [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.psd\ShellEx] [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.psd\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}] @="{0B6DC6EE-C4FD-11d1-819A-00C04FB69B4D}" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{0B6DC6EE-C4FD-11d1-819A-00C04FB69B4D}] @="Photoshop Icon Handler" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{0B6DC6EE-C4FD-11d1-819A-00C04FB69B4D}\InProcServer32] @="C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Common Files\\Adobe\\Shell\\psicon.dll" "ThreadingModel"="Apartment"
I couldn't get the PSICON.DLL thing to work on Windows 7 x64 even with the revised regedit. I did all the stuff like clearing the thumbnail cache, setting image previews in PS to always save, opening and re-saving some PSD files, putting psicon.dll in both adobe shell directories, but I still had the regular PSD-PS thumbnails.
So I downloaded the PSD codec from Ardfry Imaging and that worked just fine. It was a real treat to be able to see what was in all those forgotten about PSD files that I couldn't be bothered to open.

I couldn't get the psicon.dll thing working either (windows 7 pro 32 bit) but the Ardry worked a treat!! Thank you for the alternative. Now I can see my psd thumbnails again!
Of course the only problem with the Ardfry Imaging codec is that it is only free for 15 days. After that you'll have to come up with $19.95 to pay for it.
If your budget is a bit tight you can always install FastStone Image Viewer which you can use as an alternative to Windows Explorer for viewing and working with image files. It is Freeware and shows thumbnails for all the regular image files along with thumbnails for PSD, TGA, PNG, ICO, etc.
It is not as slick as Windows Explorer but it does the job of letting you see what is in the PSD files without having to open them.
I can attest to the fact that this doesn't work as well. Tried it with psicon.dll in both "Program Files" and "Program Files (x86)", and altered the registry edit accordingly. Restarted the computer both times, and nothing.
My guess is that it might have something to do with the fact that the psicon.dll is from version 7, where as in my case (and in most others) I have CS3 (v10) installed. So the older dll cannot render newer PSD files from later versions.
There is a freeware program called Sage Thumbs that you can use. It will generate thumbnails for .psd and other rare image formats in windows explorer. It used to only work with XP but now works with Windows 7 32 & 64 bit.
You can get it here SageThumbs 2.0.0.12 But you will need to translate the page with google or some other browser - it's not in english.
Anyway, just thought I'd pass it along!

Thankyou so much for that link Tagen! I registered only to thankyou because prior to finding this program I was using a different one that, after it's trial, would open a prompt to register the program and forced me to wait 10 seconds before I could close it every time I opened up any program that viewed any thumbnail I don't have a job at the moment so I couldn't afford to register the program (plus people who put timers on simple things like closing windows I despise quite greatly - so I refused to pay for anything this individual put out anyway - it's one thing to stop the program from working after a trial but quite another to hijack my explorer windows with windows I cannot close when I want to)
Anyway I just really wanted to thankyou for sharing!!
