What's weird is I have 4 USB flash drives like everyone is talking about. They all work like they are supposed to. The one I am having problems with is a 250 GB Seagate external hard drive. I hate to mess with it too much....it has all my back-up stuff on it.

I hate to use a third party app when Windows should do what I need.

One of my 4 GB UFD works like it is supposed to - but that one is the one that I have my Win7 install files on.

The one with the PortableApps menu system is the one that goes stupid, particularly when I run KeePass Password Safe. I think ti is b/c of the way that KeePass creates a system-wide key to allow for automate user name and PW entry - since that is linked to the program, even when the program exits it is still somehow in Windows 7 leaving a trace of itself somewhere, and thus the UFD fails to eject.

Of course, I have never tried running the app in Vista compatibility, and that might solve my problems....

    Hmmm....

My solution is clearly a bad one, but you could just unplug it. It shouldn't be a problem for Hi-Speed USB 2.0

Sigh. I already *do* that - the point is that Windows is not *releasing* the device even when it is not in use at all. That is a problem. A bug, but only if I can verify it is not actually b/c of the software that I run from it....

So do any of you "more experienced" people know why the "safely remove hardware" icon would be showing "Windows host process"? Is it supposed to be doing this?

That makes sense, that external HD is NTFS format. Good tip to check into....
