Windows 7: Only show icons (and hide notifications)

Windows 7
Only show icons (and hide notifications)

The notification area customization dialog allows for 3 options per icon:
  1. Only show notifications
  2. Show icon and notifications
  3. Hide icon and notifications
What about the fourth option?

For some programs I want the quick notification icon access, but don't want to see their annoying notifications - which can't be disabled from the program itself

Any resolution for the matter (3rd party perhaps) ?
Note I would like to have this on a per icon basis, as some other programs do have important notifications (e.g. windows update)

Well, you can configure Action Center not to send you messages in each monitored category. Other than that you'll need group policy (so not an option for Home versions) and the bad news is that you can only turn off all or none at present. I have a vague notion that it may be possible to reduce the time for which they stay open but that may well also be a group policy fix.

That's disgusting. So the answer is there is no such option. Well, it was like that for XP also.

I removed the ability for the OS to even display such notifications via nlite. vlite works for windows 7, so maybe that's an option. Though, a radical one.
