Cool Idea, however when you use %windir%\System32\DisplaySwitch.exe /clone and %windir%\System32\DisplaySwitch.exe /extend to put the monitor back every window that was open on the second monitor is moved to the first monitor. So now all your windows are on the first monitor, using the %windir%\System32\DisplaySwitch.exe /extend does not put the windows back on the second mointor. Awesome idea and it sure was fun to play with.
Well of course!. I say with a grin becuase that never occured to me yesterday :). That's kind of annoying isn't it? but it makes perfect sense.

So there's now one caveat for my cunning plan; otherwise it works for me (pending further caveat's of course :)).

When I have more time later in the week I try to think of a workaround for this too... hmm.

    Thanks WS

    Timo,

I know there is software to remember your icons on your desktop, mostly for gamers; when you change the resolution for the game and then back to normal after the game you can click run the software and it will put all the icons back in the correct place. Is there some software like this for your open windows???

Yes and I've had it; but I can't remember if it was part of a previous Graphics card install or a separate program.

Thank you for the link, I have never seen that one before, here is the one I was thinking about:

Software DesktopOK 2.05 Save and restore the desktop icon positions.

Thanks very much WS. I've not had time to look further into this and I hope to come back to it shortly. You may have the final piece to our puzzle. :)

    Hi Kirsh,

I had the solution almost worked out for you with the batch file that I wrote, Well technically my solution works; however WS found that it messed up the desktop icons. So we weren't happy with it. Both WS and mayanman had some ideas to get around this and they've posted them (that's the new stuff above). It's up to me now to test their ideas and combine the whole lot together in an easily distributable package with steps for setting it up.

So... If I can do that and it all works fine, you'll have a workaround solution. :)
I need about a week as I've been away and I'm catching up on other commitments at the moment. Hang in there, WS and I like a good puzzle and we've almost got this one ironed out. :)

    Kirsh,

TimSitt is good he will get it worked out if he can. I will be glad to test whatever comes out. And make suggestions or offer any help I can.

Fingers crossed we will have this one worked out.

    Hi WindowsStar, mayanman, and Kirsch,

This afternoon I researched and tested the links that you guys sent me to keep the icons in the same place. They all work, thank you.

However the open windows move to the primary display and stay there after the user unlocks the computer.

Example: If I have Word open on display 1 and Excel open on Display 2. I Lock my PC and use the projector workaround to clone the displays giving the login screen on both displays. I log in again and the screens change back to extended display; but both Word and Excel and now on my Primary Display.

This is the final design hurdle before I start scripting. Any Ideas?

    Timo
