I've never really found out why/who/what was deleting stuff out of the installers folder, I just know it used to happen to me a lot more in the past when on XP. Mind you, I was using pretty "aggressive" clean-up tools at the time. I even had the folder completely emptied once!!
When I used Ace Utilities alongwith XP, experimentally I chosen a setting to delete everything out of common use .... the same thing happened for me, too. But at that days I was not too serious about it ... just formatted and reinstalled XP

how do i do an image back up... how much space does that take? I really dont want to reinstall all of my programs... i can live with the eset and supreme commander... even the itunes... but the office is bugging me...
My Cdrive size is 40.1 GB, and the backup size is 22 GB . It is stored in a separate drive. I follow Backup Complete Computer - Create an Image Backup .

BTW , I hope you have the windows 7 installer DVD . If no, to restore the backup, you will need the recovery disk, download it from the neosmart files

It might help you if somehow you got your hands on the Office '07 and the ESET Nod32 AV installer folders if that is what you are running. You could then see if your icons come back!

Download takeownership.zip . Run takeownership.reg. It will add take ownership shortcut to your right click context menu.

Right click on the relevant folder. Take ownership of it. Now you can paste it there.

       Warning
Dont misuse it . Dont use it to take ownership of any other file or folder that you cannot handle properly. If you do so, it will be risky .

What does it say ? Whether it is saying you need permission or something else ?

If pasting is really impossible, go for the last option, that is reinstallation of the affected programs .

That, as they say, is not a good move. Certain things will look for certain things and if no longer owned by the system (think of it like salary, it's your money but the government gets to pinch what they want without you giving permission!!) will screw up eventually. The "secret" of take ownership is to only use it when and where you need to.

ok i shall untake permission then... target: access is denied or specified file path does not exist...

Turns out i cant reinstate Windows ownership of the files

    [Edit]
I have fixed my office icons.. i had to manually remove office and then reinstall it... but what caused the files to go missing..
