what you have to do is switch back and fourth through the sound settings hdmi and your on board sounds disable the onboard enable the hdmi sound it should show the icon then to switch back repeat first steps in reverse disable hdmi and enable sound

i have this set up sound wont work any other way cause it is going through the video card
what do you mean by this?

    So correct me:

    1. only certain newer video cards have sound chip onboard the graphics boards?

    2. if the video card doesnt have onboard sound chip i can reroute my soundcard thru the HDMI?

    i bought this

    1. Correct. All ATI cards from the HD 2xxx series and up have Realtek audio built on the card. For Nvidia it is only recently that they added self-contained audio on their cards; as far as I know all the new GTX 4xx cards do, as well as a few of the low end GT 2xx (220 and 240 only I believe) and the G series (210, 310). There might be the odd one out there not from any of the one's I listed, like a very rare Nvidia 7650 GT that not only had an audio chip on it but a native HDMI port (there is one thread on the forum I know of about this card).

    2. That only applies to any of the Nvidia cards from the 8xxx series and up, and then only if the card has a SPDIF header on the card. If the card does not have that header for attaching a cable to the sound car's SPDIF out header, then it is not possible to send audio in any way shape or form. Already post a link showing how this works but here it is again in case you missed it,

Guide: 8800GT/9800GT/9800GTX Sound over HDMI (Now including Creative cards) - Overclock.net - Overclocking.net

As far as that cable you bought goes there is one very large thing missing from its description, nowhere on that page does it say anything about it being able to send audio, just video. Read the warning that is listed with this cable,

    For only $3.91 each when QTY 50+ purchased - 3FT 24AWG CL2 HDMI DVI Cable w / Net Jacket - Black | Premium 24AWG HDMI-DVI Cables

As I understand it the DVI ports that allow audio over HDMI via DVI-HDMI adapter use a dual link DVI connector and port, but with a couple of the pins changed for the audio and that it does not work with standard DVI-HDMI adapters or cables. For this you need an adapter that should have come with the card, or if it didn't come with one contacting the card manufacturer and requesting one.
