    HP Laser Jet 4000 Drivers

I have an ancient HP Laser Jet 4000. But I have maintained it, it has a Jet Direct Card and its own IP address and 68MB of RAM.

Everything is working but the Universal driver for it lowers the DPI to 600 instead of 1200 and the pagers per minute are also lower. This is also compatible with the 4100. Any drivers that will work with Windows 7 x64 that are not the Universal driver?

    Thanks in advance!

This is the second HP Printer driver question in a row for me. HP really sticks it to you when it comes to printer > 5 years (I think it's 5). I think it would be so easy to create new drivers, but I suspect they prefer to benefit by creating this obsolescence. I actually think it's great the universal driver works.

I posted this in the HP forums. I looked into this further and the driver MS provides is the one that knocks the DPI down. The Universal x64 driver bumped it back up to 1200 DPI but lowered the PPM.

It is a very old printer but as I said, I have maintained it and it just keeps working and chugging along. The amount of RAM means it can handle more than I can throw at it.

Yep, it's a trade-off. But I think I'd take the higher dpi over ppm. And I loved HP printers. We have switched to Lexmark with no complaints.

I can't complain. As soon as it reached a certain page count it was retired and given to me. I love the amount of memory, the large 500 page trays (only use one) the Jet Direct network card and the print quality. I just replaced all of the rollers. It's old, but reliable and a work horse. I opted for the Universal drivers and the 1200 DPI.

    Good choice!
