Plug and play software device enumerator missing

OK.. Yesterday, I noticed that my audio had stopped working. I reinstalled the audio drivers, scanned for hardware changes etc. to re detect it again but it was always detected with an error icon.

On further inspection, I found that under system devices in my device manager, the 'plug and play software device enumerator' was also showing an error icon. Trying to update the drivers didn't result in anything. Sadly, I uninstalled it hoping that a hardware scan would re-detect it and install the proper drivers.

Unfortunately, hardware scan didn't detect it again and all attempt to reinstall "plug and play software device enumerator" failed. There was a method to reinstall this in XP by modifying the machine.inf file but it too didn't reinstall the device. Attaching the error page on installation attempt.

Can anyone please suggest a solution for firstly, getting back the plug and play software device enumerator and secondly, my audio drivers. I am hoping that fixing the first problem will fix the second problem too.

Hi MilliR, welcome to the forums , try re installing the chipset and audio drivers ASUSTeK Computer Inc.-Support- , or alternatively right click on the devices with the triangle and exclamation mark and select "update driver" hope that helps

I have updated and installed the audio drivers but its still the same. As I stated, my main problem seems to be that "PLUG AND PLAY ENUMERATOR" is missing. Any help on reinstalling that will be helpful.

Hi MilliR, It's worth a try Repair Install Also you could try the sfc/scannow command to see if you have any corrupted system files that are stopping you installing the enumerator software SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker hope this helps you
