Windows 7: Too scared to update....

Too scared to update....

Hi I have a laptop I bought in Japan with Japanese keyboard etc. Anyways, I removed the OS and placed windows 7 on it and it works a treat, no issues at all....

When I ran the Device Doctor just more out of interest it listed many many drivers that i should update but a lot of these are sort of Japanese language keyboard updates that might screw up my system.

Some of the keys are out of sync, like the * is @ but i learnt how to remember them!

Of course I can roll back to a system restore but you reckon that is safe and fool proof, does it really 100% take it back to the way it was?

If it aint broke dont fix it, but - maybe I will have a security issue very soon if I dont update, the drivers are like 15 months old or thereabout.

Driver updates very rarely (more like never) contain security updates.

If it aint broke dont fix it
Stick with this thought, uninstall that comfort-ware driver program and don't worry about it. If you think you need a driver update only ever get them from the laptop manufacturer, never through one of those driver update programs.

Another vote to uninstall that Device Doctor program. You stay away from such programs. If you ever want to know if your system is up-to-date, then following two links are very trustworthy:
Secunia Personal Security Inspector Download
Belarc Advisor - Free Personal PC Audit

If your system ever develops a problem, then these links are useful:
MS - Windows 7 Solution Center
MS Fix it Solution Center
MS Windows Live OneCare safety scanner: Free online tool for PC health and safety

And of course the mother lode of all assistance is the SevenForums.

And just something to keep in mind. Before I install any programs or drivers I always create a restore point, that way if I don't like or want the program or new driver you can easily uninstall them then do a system restore to where it was before you downloaded and installed anything.

Your out of sync keyboard can be corrected via simple registry modification.

Somehow Windows 7 incorrectly identifies some Japanese keyboard as regular 101-key keyboard.

Go to:

and change the existing values to these:

LayerDriver JPN REG_SZ kbd106.dll
OverrideKeyboardIdentifier REG_SZ PCAT_106KEY
OverrideKeyboardSubtype DWORD 2
OverrideKeyboardType DWORD 7

I will also add that any app that tells you it will go out and find all your drivers for you?
Stay away from them, they are snake oil BS.
They will do your system far more harm than good.
