Windows 7: Canon LBP6650dn driver saga

Canon LBP6650dn driver saga

After six working days of jumping through hoops, I have finally managed to install a brand new Canon LBP6650dn.

If anyone else is thinking of buying one in the UK, note that

(a) the supplied software disc is only compatible with Win 7 32bit

(b) Canon UK online and telephone support were basically no help and the drivers on the UK site do not work

(c) via a contact in Canon UK, I finally figured out the answer.

What you do is go to Canon U.S.A. : Consumer & Home Office : imageCLASS LBP6650dn
and follow the instructions.

This will install the printer as an "unspecified USB device".

Right click on that, run Windows troubleshooter, and when it tells you that the driver is missing, click on "Fix this problem".

Everything will then be sweetness and light - at least until you try to override the printer defaulting to single-sheet feed. But that's another story (which as yet has no end) ...

Before starting the driver installation, connect only the LAN cable first, do not connect the USB cable at this time.
This is necessary for your printer to acquire IP address automatically before you start the driver installation and enable driver installer function.

Yep, they don't make it easy, do they?

I used the UFR_II_Driver_2040_Win_x64_us_EN exe file and queried that note myself. I was told to disconnect the USB cable, connect to the LAN, turn the printer on, run the exe file, restart, connect the USB cable, then restart again.

That's what I did and it worked.

I still can't get the thing to default to the paper cassette though, but my contact at Canon has just emailed me to say that this has now been escalated to the highest level in the UK service department, so I guess I might be a bit wiser on Monday.

It's one hell of a series of hoops to jump through to get a printer to work ...

Why not try all 3, they've all been released on they same date, and my have different functions. Who knows, it may even fix your paper issues.

If I was more up to speed with this stuff I would, but frankly I have just about had enough of this printer after dealing with Canon UK "support" literally every day this week and only just getting somewhere today when I was lucky enough to get a shortcut through to Mission Control.

Canon UK know what my problem is and have said that they'll fix it, so now I'm just going to wait and do what they tell me to do on Monday. Meanwhile, I have an unusable printer sitting here for a second weekend. But hey, life goes on.

If it's not 100% by close of business Monday, it goes back to the supplier Tuesday.

That's the best move as it'll make them want to fix it.

As for tech support, that's pretty pathetic that they can't tell you how to get it sorted when there are drivers posted.

Seems to me they should at least be able to tell you what all 3 of those drivers are for.

Pretty pathetic I say.

Good luck.

Thanks.

Actually, I think the highlight of the whole drivers saga is that on the Canon UK support site there are three different drivers listed for 7 64-bit (they're not as recent as the ones on the US site).

I have been assured by three different Canon UK "support" staff that each one of those three is actually the right one to use ...

That's not saying alot as there are 3 drivers. A good tech support technician should be able to tell you why you need to use a particuliar driver. They should also be able to explain to you why there are 3 different drivers posted and what they're for!

There's a reason those 3 drivers are there! Especially since they have the SAME posting date.

My two cents.
