Kari, thanks for the offer of help, and so quickly too!

I haven't tried to install the scanner on my Win7RC as I rarely use it,
and when I do I use it on another computer with Vista. The Vista x64
    drivers may work.

For the HP LaserJet 1020 printer , similar. It works on my Vista computer.
I just noticed a thread on sevenforums which will probably work: HP Laserjet 1020 drivers

(If the printer is installed on Win7, I print too many of my downloaded pdf files.
    I'm trying to reform. )

    6300 works

I was able to get my hp 6300 scanner to work (mostly) under w7. It uses the same drivers as the 5300 so who knows.

The secret was to install all of the HP XP drivers and software and update to the software in xp sp2 compatibility mode for all users of the machine. I don't remember exactly, but there were 4 or 5 different files and updates to install and rebotting between amny of them.

After the last update and reboot, I got an error message saying that something failed during the install, but i ignored that. The hp scanning software worked. Winods scan and fax however could not find the scanner.

On each subsequent boot, I goot the message saying that the install failed, so I disabled the hp install from msconfig, so it no longer runs at startup.

In summary, the scanner works wth the hp software, but not with the w7 native stuff.

By the way, this (or an office jet mentioned below) was the last piece of hp hardware i purchased (and i will never purchse another piece) due to the horrible and late driver support. I remember waiting 18 months for a dirver for an hp office jet that I bought on the same day as I purchased my 98 to XP upgrade. On the box of the printer there was a sticker saying "XP drivers will be available upon the relaease of XP!" - 18 months later!

    Never again.

    Edit:

I tried to use the scanner yesterday, and it seems that my initial prognosis that the scanner works with the HP software under w7 was a bit premature.

It will work for a couple of pages, but eventually the whole thing stops responding, requiring that I kill all hp related processes manually, power down the scanner. then restart everything.

It took 2 hours to scan 15 pages.

    Sorry for giving false hope.

On the canon site (I think it was UK) it said drivers for 5200,5300, 6200, 6300. 6300C .... and gave the same download.

You can verify for sure by looking in the inf file.

(I am not at the machine where I have the 6300, so I can not check right now)

According to this HP page there will be no Win7 driver for the 6300. What's strange to me is the fact that nearly all older scanners aren't supported but some models are. What's the difference between them and the not supported?

MONEY. HP think its time we spent some money replacing our scanners with them, as we haven't done it for a while. Kind of like our lease period has run out.

its high time we all upgraded.

There's nothing more i'd rather do then buy another scanner that does exactly the same job as the one I already had before

or maybe its because these scanners are actually rebranded Avision devices? (serious comment but un confirmed) & HP cant be arsed and dont give a F***

i'm looking into trying some of their drivers....
