Maybe I am not making myself clear you can quite happily uninstall all the not connected devices, you can even uninstall the connected devices.(that should by this stage be disconnected anyway) Windows makes a data base of drivers, every time you plug in a USB device this data base gets updated to enable the device to be reinstalled if you remove it and plug it in again even if you use a different port. The important point here is this data base can become corrupted causing problems and that is what I am trying to sort out here.
The only stipulation is; after deleting the infcache.1 file you must plug in a device that was working before ie your Toshiba mass storage device.

Yes, that is exactly what I did.

All those drivers that show as unconnected except for the mass storage one were created when I plugged in the mouse and keyboard. If I uninstall them, the mouse and keyboard will stop working even though it still has the device drivers than say connected.

Yes, I unplugged it during the short time that the computer was off during the reboot.

When you first installed the drivers were the mouse and keyboard already plugged in?

No, I plugged them in after installing/rebooting.

Do you have a card reader or other hardware that is connected internally to a USB header on the motherboard? If so, disconnect it/them and see if that helps.

Probably won't do a fresh install until my next storage upgrade but I'll make sure to report back.
