External Hard Drive

At the moment I have a Hitachi 160B hard drive which I use as an external hard drive which is kept in an alluminium case and connected to my computer with a USB lead.

I want to retain the cse and put a 300GB had drive in place of the 160gb, can anyone recomend a a good hard drive for the job please?

First of all I would open the case to find out if the drive inside has a IDE or SATA connection and go from there.
All my hard drives I had over the last say 5 years were WDs but Seagates served me well before, too
In fact the only drive that ever gave me grieve was a maxtor.

Thanks for that DG. I had a similar experience with a Maxstore and said I would never buy another one. I was offered a Seagate 500GB and a caddy for 115-00 yesterday so I think I will go down that road.

I've only used Western Digital drives and they have never failed me. I understand Seagate make a good drive as well but I'll stick with my WD's. Maxtor are the only drives I have ever had difficulties with only that was quite a few years ago.

Dose your enclosure have it's own power supply? I only ask because if it doesn't getting to large of a drive may cause problems with the USB port being able to supply adequate power to the drive.

As mentioned above your going to have to make sure which style drive the case takes before you make your purchase. IDE/PATA or an SATA.

I will buying the drive separate togetherw ith what they call a 'Caddy' over here with its own power supply. This give you a personal choice of driver brand and you see it being put into the 'Caddy' On your recomendation, I will try and get a Western Digital. The guy connects it all up then all you have to do is bring it home, plug in and formt it. That's a fun game!

Thanks again for your help. I think I will go for the 300gb, that should be big enough for back ups. I can clean out my existing 160gb disc and use that for my photographs only.

best wishes,
RonBin
