I'm having the both of these problems as well. For the PCI Simple Communications Controller. I went to my system on gateways support site:
    Gateway Support Drivers & Downloads
and tried running two of the newer motherboard updates in compatibility mode.
One of them claims that the driver I have is newer than the one I'm trying to install; while the other one starts but erors out claiming the "file copy was not successful"
I tried updating on the Intel site, but can't find my motherboard model. My BIOS version is "MQ96510J". So using this page:
Desktop Boards - List of BIOS identifier codes
My BIOS version is listed, but multiple times, so I don't know the exact motherboard model. If anyone can point me to the correct location it would be appreciated.
My other problem concerns the Realtek audio driver. I have never used it before and don't know if I need to. Before Vista SP1 I had used the Sigmatel Audio Driver. But due to incompatibility with SP1 I update to the newer IDT driver listed on the Gateway support page (that I posted above). Since this IDT driver is not the same manufacturer of my Sigmatel audio card anyways, should I use the Realtek driver instead? The IDT driver is currently running fine, but I am just wondering if there may be any benefits. Thanks..

Download a program called Unknown Devices, run it and that'll tell you what the listed device is, and you can track down the correct driver that way.

I have the same error in Device Manager with PCI Simple Communication Controller. I downloaded Unknown Devices, but when I run it I get "Error - List Index out of Bounds"

Update - I found a Beta Version of Unknown Devices and it worked, although it only told me that the Controller was Intel. Nothing on Itel Website to help though.

Try driverguide.com, if you know the model number (ie P123), you can likely get it there. You'll have to sign up for a free membership though.

I had the same problem finding a driver for my Intel DQ35J0 board and I corrected it by inserting the motherboard CD and letting windows search. It found it and it's actually identified as an Intel AMT SOL driver.

Once I knew that, I was able to go to my motherboard downloads on Intel's site and get the newest driver. It was listed as an Intel Active Management Technology Serial over LAN driver.

I'm actually not running Win7 on that board, I'm running Server 2008 R2, but the drivers should work in either case.

    Hope this helps....

    intels fix

Here is the solution that works. It is not a Modem, a audio driver, etc. Most people want to have you reinstall windows when that is not neccessary.

Error on PCI Simple Communications Controller
If the Intel® Management Engine (Intel ME) driver has not been successfully installed, you may see an error on a "PCI Simple Communications Controller" in Device Manager.

To resolve this issue, install the Intel® Management Engine Interface driver for your desktop board. This driver can be installed from either:

The Express Installer CD that came with your board (in the Software\Driver\Advance_Fan_Speed_Control__AFSC folder)
The latest driver downloaded from Intel's Download Center.

this worked on all our lab computers and my home PC.
