Windows 7: Win 7 Sleep and Wake Issues

16 Jul 2009   #11

Win 7 (7100)
Success! Sort of....

Well, it will now come back from hibernation, quite happily....on one condition....I press the power button and do a soft boot before it resumes...

It flatly refuses to wake up to my mouse, keyboard or even the PS/2 keyboard I have plugged in. I don't know yet if it wakes up for recordings, am going to test that shortly.

My mouse and keyboard ARE on a Hub, but if its not waking up from a PS/2 keyboard, it seems to me something is set wrong?

MST has USB wakeup enabled and I have wakeup from the HID devices of the mouse and keyboard set as allowed to wake computer....

I know I'm a pain, but any other fantatic cures you've got!?

If you don't regularly use the CCC features, it's just wasting your resources. I don't install it for customers at work and haven't had any complaints - nor do I use it on my home system (this is the first ATI card I've had in 10 years).

Win 7 (7100)

Would gladly uninstall it, if I could....stupid ATI, think everyone wants their stuff permanently installed.

On another note I learnt a valuable lesson I already knew.....don't turn off away mode, IT STOPS MC FROM RECORDING....der...

Still trying to get these HID's working, see if I have any luck with it tonight

Download the driver-only package from the ATI website
Uninstall all the ATI stuff through Control Panel...Programs...Uninstall a program
Install the freshly downloaded driver-only package and you'll be up and running in no time!

Win 7 (7100)

I've not had a BSOD now in a while.....however (oh no he says)

I'm using MST because I was concerned the computer wouldn't sleep and wake properly if I didn't. I have a feeling now however its hindering rather than helping. I have it set to s3+s4 Hybrid worries. BUT I also have it set on use away mode "on application request".....Last night it wouldn't go to sleep, something was sending an away mode signal permanently....then it rebooted this morning, haven't had a chance to check what made it do that.....

I'm wondering if I should just ditch MST and try trusting windows to sort out its own sleep and wake for timing and scheduled events?

I THINK the mouse and keyboard problem is fixed, but will know more tonight.

Thankyou VERY much for all your help usasma, and if that's all you have time for, I appreciate it very much and I'm sure I'll sort all the little bits out.

Are you using a Win7 version of MST (Matrix Storage Technology I presume)?
If not, it's possible that there's an incompatibility with it and sleep mode.

I have a similar problem with my RAID card drivers. They aren't quite compatible w/Win7 - but they work well enough for the OS to run without issue. From my emails w/Microsoft (due to the bug report I submitted), it has to do with a very small and specific section of the driver that manages the sleep stuff. Their solution was to update to Win7 drivers (and there aren't any for my RAID card) to overcome this issue.

I think there's Win7 drivers for this on the Asus website, and here's a link for the Intel Win7 64 bit Matrix Storage drivers: Download Search Results!

Funny, I just visited Intel and saw the new storage manager & the new Win 7 option, then here you saw them too :). I just downloaded 8.9. I've never had a problem with the ICH10A RAID - my OS is on an ICH10A RAID 0 and has survived several bluescreens .

I also NEVER install CCC- just the Radeon driver as you mention, and never had a problem. CCC is just too much bloat I don;t use.

Asus doesn't show Win 7 drivers yet, at least for my mobo, but I've been using the Vista-64 ones and have had no problems yet.

Win 7 (7100)

Ooops sorry,

What I actually meant was MST- Mediacentre Standby Tool....They've just released a Win 7 version

However, I'll have a look at the RAID drivers, cause that was giving me some grief.

The biggest thing at the moment is, Halalueia I can make it Sleep! Well, Hibernate. as LONG as I'm running MST it'll sleep- The tool engages all sorts of hard to reach power options and makes them all work

However, It refuses to wake record, when I move the mouse or keyboard, anything, the only way I can wake it is AGAIN by soft booting and then it resumes no trouble (so we've at least fixed the BSOD's!)

There's various options within MST to disable USB selective suspend, Disable quick Resume and a bunch of other things. I'll play around with them, but the thing is, without MST, the computer refuses to hibernate. There's no hiberfil.sys file, EVEN when all the hibernate options are on. You tell it to hibernate, the "hibernating..." screen pops up VERY briefly and it slips back to the desktop.

The ONLY thing I could gleen from the powercfg tool was that the driver srvnet.sys had "recently requested system control." In other words, it was stopping the comp from hibernating. Oh, and apparently none of my USB devices will engaged in suspend when the computer sleeps according to powercfg....interesting considering they do in Vista.

According to Google, the fix for srvnet was leave the Homegroup as srvnet is the Server driver and when in a homegroup it can send a permanent signal to stop sleep.....nothing happened, I left the homegroup and it still wouldn't hibernate.

So, I'm stuck with either:

- Use MST and not have it wake up for recordings (pointless) or by anything except rebooting

- DON'T use MST and not have it sleep at all.

I'm wondering if a new build might slice some of these problems. I'm getting to the point where I just want to go back to my Vista 64 partition, it might have been much slower being Vista, but at least it worked. I realise 7 is still a work in progress, but it seems the sleep issues, which were fixed in Vista after rarely working in XP, have coaxed MS into going backwards and reinstalling the troublesome code!

This sounds to me more and more like the issues that I was having with my RAID stuff.

In my emails with the storage folks at Microsoft reference was made to a specific section of the storage drivers where different code (intended for Vista) wasn't working properly (for Win7). I tried all of the solutions that they offered, except for the RAID drivers (my RAID card manufacturer won't support Win7 for my card

So, I've purchased a new card, and have the Win7 drivers for it - but am waiting for the RTM to install it and see how it works. My power settings needs are much simpler than yours - I just need the system to sleep and wake up when I tell it to.

Win 7 (7100)

Mmmm, gonna install the Win 7 drivers for RAID tonight, had a Disk error appear in the event log a couple of times saying the controller had caused errors when the comp woke up.

Basically, I can only get the comp to sleep running MST, but I CAN'T wake it up ANYWAY, mouse, keyboard, TV tuner, nothing.

Will try the new controller, but it might have to be a new build a hope it works.
