Missing Graphics Card Driver

Hello,

I have an older ATI-Radeon video card that I want to use because it has some advantages for my case over newer ones.

There are three different drivers available today, as far as I know. One from the manufacturer website, which is not good because as they don’t do any more updates to the driver, they have one that is the same for a set of cards and depending of OS system, but has almost no controls.

There are two more drivers from Microsoft. One of them has controls, but the video is of very poor quality and gives a 2.1 rating to the computer. The other one is the best, gives a computer ratio over 6.6, and has more complete and precise controls on the Catalyst Control Center.

After installing, Windows updates found the best, but later I had some problems, had to uninstall this driver and Windows reinstalled another one, however not the same as before, just the bad one, as above.

How can I find the best driver initially installed by Windows Updates? I can't remember the version that was first installed by Windows. I searched the MS download center (Microsoft Download Center), but couldn't find a drive for my graphics card, but if Windows installed it, it should be there.

I can't make a System Restore. I have tried everything, even uninstalling the video driver completely and getting a blank screen until rebooting and Windows reinstalling the same second bad driver, but could never get the best one back.

Any suggestions on how to get that driver back, please? Because I did have it before.

Hi, thanks.
It is the one on my System Specs in this forum: ATI EAX300SE-X/TD. On its ASUS site page there are no drivers for Win7... i know that according to this ASUS page they are now legacy, and the driver they offer is the one I mentioned on my first post, but I had a better version from Windows update, and that is what I am looking for.

If this is for the X300 SE listed in your specs hen this is the only driver available for it for Windows 7,

ATI Catalyst

as AMD has dropped all support for all DirectX 9 cards from before the HD 2xxx series. It says it is for Vista but works just fine with those cards in Windows 7. You also won't find a Windows 7 driver because ATI/AMD never released on for it.

Sorry stormy13. I was adding that information to my second post while you were writing yours. I referred the same page you tell me. I have been there many other times before. The driver name on that page is 10-2_legacy_vista32-64_dd_ccc.exe. This is the one from ASUS that I mentioned on my first post.

Now I have a question, please:
- On the card downloads page on ASUS site (as above) there are drivers for Vista 64-bit, and are definitely better. Will they work with 7? What is the risk to try?

The driver from Asus is nothing more than the exact same thing you would get from AMD, with the only difference being that it may be repackaged into Asus' installer. As far as a better driver from Windows Update, unless AMD released only to be available through WU, it is likely the same as the legacy driver (without the CCC).

OK, thank you. Could you just answer my question, please, just to clear my doubts:

I have used these drivers with Vista, and I know they were better than those legacy drivers. So I will pick them instead of the legacy if I can. I am not sure if I can because the drivers are now for both Vista and 7, but when Win7 did not yet exist they were for Vista only. (And – this is an example only – for my motherboard buitlin video there are separate drivers for Vista and 7.) Any problem?

Yes they work with Windows 7.

I would be willing to bet that if it was the driver from Asus you were using then the one you got from Windows Update is likely the same one as the legacy driver, seeing as the legacy driver is close to a year newer than the one from Asus.

Thank you and sorry for the delay. I don't really know which driver it was, and that is why i came here to see if there was a way to find it on Windows sites. What I j~know is that is was better than those we have been talking about here, and I know that because I've tried them. Well, thanks anyway.
