The network printer is a brother DCP-145C and up until 2 weeks ago was prinitng from both computers well. My laptop recognises the printer but the printer does not print anything requested by the laptop. The PC prints perfectly. Sharing appears to be set up correctly. what alse can I check? please help?????

Try a system restore around the problem - did you install anything in that 2 week period - updates maybe - its annoying - a new driver required perhaps - keep working on it it must be something you did that knocked out a setting - a simple setting eg with Microsoft word when you click on print, and when the print screen shows there is the name of the printer, and an arrow with other devices this can sometimes be changed to a different device - you could check that, as that will stop the print if a wrong device is enabled as default.

I have an older Lexmark printer that will occasionally stop printing. Resetting to an earlier restore point usually allows me to complete one printing job and then it stops working again. I found that I have to uninstall then reinstall the driver in order for the printer to work a couple more weeks. Lexmark support said the printer is going on 9 years old and compatilbility between it and Windows 7 is "iffy" at best. Perhaps your Brother DCP-145C is similarly challenged. If you want to try uninstalling/reinstalling a fresh driver:

    Brother: DCP-145C: Downloads: Drivers: Others

PLEASE NOTE: Use their uninstall tool and when reinstalling select 32-bit or 64-bit as appropriate.

    Is the laptop Win7 32-bit or 64-bit?

When you initiate the print of something from the laptop, do you see the printer icon appear in the System Tray on the laptop? Does it remain visible indefinitely, or does it disappear?

On the Win7 laptop, if you Start -> Devices and Printers -> select the shared printer on the XP machine -> right-click -> OPEN, is the document you just printed shown there?
