    Audio Driver Problem

    ok hi,

i have just purchased a PC which im running as a server, with server 2008 (windows 7)

I have managed to find the drivers for the NIC, now all that i need are the audio drivers.

I have the multimedia controller in device manager, and it finds no drivers online. I have downloaded and installed some drivers i found, and they appeared to install fine, but when i open the audio properties in control panel, there is no audio device selectable. If i look in device manager, i see that its installed the driver for SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio. My volume control in the taskbar also remains with an x.

any ideas on a fix for this, its quite urgent and i need audio drivers.

    here are my stats:

    Mainboard Model: Intel Corporation D865GBF
    Chipset: Intel i865P/PE/i848P
    Southbridge: 82801EB (ICH5)
    CPU: Intel Pentium 4

ive never had any problems sourcing drivers for old hardware for a newer os, so i beginning to thing i may be screwed

    Thanks for any help!!

Your biggest problem is the age of that old 856G chipset and the zero lack of any Windows 7 support. Probably find it is running at the bare minimum (as in just enough to function) with whatever default driver Windows installed for it. If you haven't yet give this a try for the chipset,

then try the last XP driver for the audio,

For the audio driver you may have to use compatibility mode to get it to install,

thanks, i think i managed to install the XP driver, through device manager, it installs sucessfully but no devices appear in the sound configuration in control panel

i guess this is a driver compatibility issue

    Thanks!

has anyone got anymore ideas on this one?? im really stuck

i installed the XP driver, and the driver its self installed fine. But no devices are found in sound properties. Theres a x at the bottom right audio in the taskbar, and if i right click, playback devices, there are no devices.

is there any way around this, please

    Thanks!

May not do anything, but did you run the Intel chipset update utility?

yes, the intel update one just installed...and there was no program to run or anything, ran the executable, it installed and nothing happened after that, no start menu shortcuts, desktop shortcuts nothing :S just installed to C:\Intel

and the same with the latest XP drivers, installed but still no device found for playback

    Thanks

If running it as a server, do you really need sound on it?

If you do need sound on it here is something to consider,

    Newegg.com - DIAMOND XtremeSound XS51 5.1 Channels 16-bit 48KHz PCI Interface Sound Card

At least it does have Windows 7 support.
