    Windows 7 Optical Drive Issues

It seems as though my two optical dvd-rom & dvd-ram drives are working only intermittantly, since loading windows 7 64 ultimate from vista 64 ultimate.

While there are many drivers that I have saved as downloads plus those that can be found online there are drivers that are only available via disk, so having the optical drives consistently function properly is of the utmost importance.

Anyone with any suggestions are solutions please let us all know your thoughts.

    Thankx in advance..........

I found this on a website when my bluray drive stopped working. Go to this registry address in RegEdit and delete a something on the right called "Upper ____" and "Lower ___" I don't remember exactly, but after i deleted them, i was golden.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

    EDIT

    It's called "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters"

    Hello Seliga,

Exactly as you described I have deleted the upperFilters...did not see any lowerfilters file though.

Have tried to get the optics to work but they still are not functioning properly. They only see that there is a disk in the drive but don't not read the disk like before.

Not sure if a restart is necessary will do that now.

O.K. I since I am running two optical drives in noticed that there are three different control sets: set 1 , set 2 and the current control set...I found the upper filters in the current and the control set 1 so I deleted both of them.

This photo shows what the remaining files look like in both of the control set folders as well as the current control set folder look like.

    So that was it?

I think the issue stems from the hardware being assigned to a certain software to open, but that software doesn't work right. I had this issue when I install Arcsoft media software to integrate BluRay with WMC(Which it didn't work btw).

Hmm, interesting I to have some arcsoft software installed, webcam companion 2 and magic-i 3 which are for controlling the hp elite autofocus cam I have.

That I have yet to get to testing to see if it works.

The reason that I wanted the optical drives to work so badly is to be able to get my Asus supremefx X-FI(creative sound blaster X-FI) card to work as the regular sound simply put is reminiscent of listening to an 'ole gramophone that my grand mother had left over from her grandmother...anyways...at least the sound is like ...mono...as opposed to stereo.

The drives worked after the restart.

Funny thing though is that thereafter upon a restart while I'm toying with the sound max driver...

    the drives did not work~!

I had installed the latest vista side gadget which is an open & close button for drives. I uninstalled that feature and again the drives are working again.

So, i'm not quite sure yet if this side gadget is also part of the issue. I will see if any intermittant issues continue upon fresh restarts.

I've found that quite a few Vista gadgets break or break things under 7. Like the "Safely Remove Harrdware" doesn't work.

    Hi guys,

My optical drive is not fully functional. I can read CD/DVDs but when I try to write it just ejects the disk (using Windows to burn the disc).

I tried using ImageBurn but its giving an error (see bottom of screenshot)

I checked my registry and it has no instance of "UpperFilters" or "LowerFilters". A screenshot of the registry too :

    Anyone got any ideas ?
