Windows 7 Volume issue: No Music, just static

For the longest time the only sounds i've been getting from my computer are static and popping noises whenever I try and play something; on both speaker and headphones.

I've tried to un-install and re-install the driver for sound but that didn't work either.

I've got a HP Mini Windows 7 Starter computer, and the audio driver is titled:
    IDT High Definition Audio CODEC.

I seriously do not know what to do and it is driving me crazy! I want to listen to music, not static!

What's the exact make and model of your HP mini? Are you downloading the sound driver from HP's website? I found this seems your not alone....You may want to try a system restore to a date prior to your problem as link suggests.

Here's the link to driver from HP's website...the date list's it as 2009
