Best of luck getting the lappy fixed. Acer are a lot better than they were 10 years or so ago.

Is Windows installed on a PATA drive? If not, why do you want it to run in IDE mode? If you've been switching modes you've likely shot yourself in the foot.

I have done so many of them that I can replace the system board of a HP 8540w laptop in 30 minutes or on a Lenovo T400 and T410. You have to remeber that most Laptop brands get their stuff from the same place, they just slap their name on it and put it in to a fancy case.
Which is some sweat shop in China no doubt

I think I will try this. Windows XP runs incredibly slow on my computer, and the C drive where Windows 7 is installed and all my other files is unreadable, therefore I would lose all my files. Guess I can give this a shot.

Thanks to everyone who helped.

Does Windows 7 have AHCI drivers at install
I have found on 4 different boards if I install in AHCI mode, Windows 7 seems to "find" the drivers for running in AHCI/RAID mode at install. If I install in IDE mode, it does not and I have no option to switch to AHCI/RAID if needed. In the past you had to press F6 (or whatever) and install them...
