Error installing drivers for ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650

    So I downloaded this driver:

    ATI Catalyst

for my card, as the AMD site said that was the correct driver for the Mobility Radeon 4600 HD series. Well, went to install it and got this error:

AMD Catalyst Mobility cannot be downloaded due to incompatible hardware/software on your computer.

The version of your graphics adapter is not supported.
What. The. Hell? They're the ones saying it's the only driver for my card. Anyone have any suggestions for getting this driver installed?

Strange. Toshiba's latest driver for this notebook and the 4650 is:

    Model Content Page

which is for Windows 7, but from 2009.

Just out of curiosity, you were finding revision number 12.1 from AMD's/ATI's site, correct?

The problem isn't the AMD driver but Toshiba themselves. From the release notes for the latest (and any version for that matter) of Catalyst,

he following notebooks are not compatible with this release:
    • Any notebook launched after this driver release
    • Switchable Graphics enabled notebooks.
    • Toshiba® notebooks (please contact the notebook OEM for driver support for these notebooks)
    • Sony® VAIO® notebooks (please contact the notebook OEM for driver support for these notebooks)
    • Panasonic® notebooks (please contact the notebook OEM for driver support for these notebooks)

Toshiba for whatever reason will not allow the install of the reference AMD (or Nvidia either) video drivers, and only allow the install of drivers from them.

That isn't to say that they can't be made to install. No guarantee that it will work (it should), but if you're up to a little challenge you can modify the INF in the AMD driver and it should then be able to install. A few relative easy steps is all it takes,

    1. Download and begin the install, which will extract the install files to C:\AMD (unless you deleted this folder, you should still have it).

    2. Go to the above folder and locate,

C:\AMD\Will be the name of whichever Catalyst suite you downlaoded\Packages\Drivers\Display

and open the INF (C7132079.inf is the one from the current mobility Catalyst) in Notepad.

    3. Next open Device Manager and locate your video card. Open the properties on it and click on the details tab and locate the DevID. It will look something like this,

    PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_6739&SUBSYS_E174174B&REV_00

the part you're interested in is bolded.

    4. Back to the INF and locate one of the following,

    "%AMD9552.1%" = ati2mtag_M9x, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9552
    "%AMD9555.1%" = ati2mtag_M9x, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9555
    "%AMD9553.1%" = ati2mtag_M9x, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9553
    "%AMD9480.1%" = ati2mtag_M9x, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9480
    "%AMD9488.1%" = ati2mtag_M9x, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9488

and change one of the DEV numbers above with the one from your card. (the Mobility HD4650 is also known as the M96, just not sure which of the above would be it).

    5. Now run the install again using the setup.exe in the first folder. If it installs you should get the warning about the driver not passing WHQL, just click "install anyway" as the change you made is what broke it.

Well, thanks for the tip, but I ran to the directory and there is no .INF file there. A bunch of .MANIFEST files, but no .INF. Any suggestions?

Did you begin the install so it could self-extract, or extract it using something like 7zip?

In any case if you can't get it to cooperate, use the download link from here,

    AMD Catalyst 12.1 (8.930.0 December 5) AMD Official WHQL - Guru3D.com Forums

It is a direct download link from AMD and I know that the 64 bit version will extract with 7zip, as that is where I got the INF name from.

I began the self-extract install. You say you pulled the INF using 7zip?

EDIT: Okay, so I went through the one you linked to and found the INF. My device ID had...

    PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9480&SUBSYS_FF151179&REV_00

...as the line. The C7132104.INF had...

    "%AMD9480.1%" = ati2mtag_M9x, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9480&SUBSYS_3000148C

...so which part of the INF line do I edit?

EDIT II: Wow, never mind. Ran the Catalyst Mobility Install from http://www2.ati.com/DriVeRs/mobile/1...dd_ccc_ocl.exe and guess what? Ran perfectly, drivers installed. I gotta bookmark that or something. Now, to see if it fixed my other problem...

Good to here that the driver from AMD installed. Surprised yours was in there as Toshiba has been one of the last to allow it (Sony being the other). Guess Toshiba finally decided to let up and allow the reference AMD driver to be installed. Sony on the other hand I doubt ever will.

    Switchable graphics radeon update problem

Hello I kinda have the same problem but no fix yet. I bought a laptop built on a H36R Pegatron platform and had Radeon 565v switchable graphics. Any gpu driver update I tried from times to times failed, until a certain catalyst pack actually installed properly and then my card was recognized as Radeon 4650HD. Now I try to install catalyst 12.3 but even though I get no error msg it doesnt actually installs. It only installs 20MB (catalyst installer) and then finishes successfully (!!!) .
    Please help.

    Thanks in advance.
