USB/Net drivers killed by Windows 7 auto update, unfixable?  

My ASUS Notebook was running fine when I went to bed the other night and Windows 7 did an auto update. I logged on the next morning and all the USB, Network Adapter, and Sound drivers were dead. I checked, and it appears that a few of the components of the Windows update did not complete successfully (.Net framework, Silverlight, etc.), so I assume this has something to do with it. I assumed it would be no big deal to fix the drivers, but boy was I wrong. Here's what I've tried (and failed) to fix the issue:

1. Uninstall latest updates (no effect).

2. Rollback to earlier recovery point (failed, no recovery points found even though I had system set to auto set them).

3. Update, rollback, uninstall, reinstall all affected drivers (reinstall fails every time with the message "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)").

4. Download drivers on other computer, burn to disc, install on broken system (same fail as in #3).

5. Uninstall all affected drivers, then use Driver & Utility disc that came with system to auto-detect and reinstall original drivers (same fail as in #3).

I can't connect to the net to run Windows Update again, and I can't back up my files since I have no USB connectivity. Is there anything I can do short of a total reformat? I assume the system is corrupted in some way. Is there a selective way to determine what's broken and a tool to repair it? Please help!

go to Command Prompt and run <sfc /scannow>

"Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

So... is that a good sign or a bad sign? What does it say about my system?

So ah... can nobody help? Sorry, I'm new here, and not really sure what it means when nobody really replies to your thread.

I use Avast, but I've also got some stuff like CCleaner and Adaware that I run from time to time. No sign of viruses at last scan (post-failure event).

Just to let you know, "Adaware" is an't really all that good. It doesn't really find all that much. Mal-Ware Bytes is better. You should try using that, it spots more than Adaware does.

Also: Get the drivers for your hardware from the manufact. and not from Windows Update. (I suggest setting Updates to where it tells you when updates are available, but doesn't install/download them automatically).

1. Tried booting in safe mode with networking, but there's still no net connection.

2. Can't roll back (no restore points found, as I said in my first post).

3. I also DL'ed the individual drivers, burned them to disc, and tried to install them manually. See my first post for what happened.

Short version: no luck.

Anyone have alternative ideas? I'm no expert, but near as I can tell I'm screwed unless there's some tool or method to search out corruptions within windows and repair them. I'm just... totally lost.
