Hi Guys,
I realise this post is fairly old and that most of you may no longer be looking at this but Im hoping some of you experts may still answer to this post. I have an Epson perfection 1640 SU scanner and I managed to follow pc specialists solution which has got me to the point of being able to do a scan in windows scan and fax viewer but for some reason when I try to do a scan in the Epson scan tool the program just closes down and disappears - no error message just like it is deliberately closing down. The Epson scan does do a preview ok but not a scan - I don't know why there is a difference but there you go. I'm hoping one of you guys may be able to help me out.
Steps I have already done include
1. downloading the windows 7 Epson 2400 scanner driver.
2. editing the Es27.inf
3. updating/installing the unsigned driver so that my windows 8.1 system recognises my 1640su perfection scanner as the 2400 scanner
Any advice is appreciated.
By the way I can easily understand why Epson didn't want to update the scanner drivers - they are in business to make money, which means selling more scanners by any means necessary and our good old 1640SU scanners have been way too reliable and hardworking for them to make a quick cash turnover in this market area - so no surprises there we will just have to keep finding ways to make ends meet to keep our beauties alive. Thanks in advance for any advice/help.

I have no experience with Win 8, but if there is any sort of compatibility mode, I would try that next.
It works fine on my 1650 and Windows 7 Pro 64.

Your best option if you want to keep the scanner is to buy Vuescan software. It ain't free but it works great and is made to operate older scanners like the Epson Perfection 1640.
VueScan Scanner Software for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux

I had an Epson Perfection 1640su photo and the Vuescan software works good.

Backup your system with something like Acronis that does disk imaging before trying VueScan.

I tried VueScan and it clobbered my interface to the scanner and I had restore.

Maybe I'll give that Vuescan software a go I don't mind paying a little bit to keep it alive, if it saves me buying a new scanner. Guess it depends how much it is. Thanks for the heads up on needing a restore, Ill try and backup stuff before I install it. Looks like I need the professional version, so I'm going to have to save up for a while before I can get it, thanks for the feedback though guys when I get it I'll let you know how it goes :)

Hi there

I'd suggest running XP in a Virtual machine if you just want to use the SCAN function - I'm still using an old CANON N1240U which only works on XP.

Vuescan is another possibility as others have mentioned - although a Paid for product. (Sometimes its worth buying a product if it does what you want and doesn't cost a fortune). I LIKE my old canon scanner --Film quality scanner too for scanning old Negatives !!( What's those the youngsters are probably saying!!!).

Another possibility is if you feel confident to boot up a Linux Distro (say from an external HDD/USB stick so you don't need to set up dual boot or another Virtual Machine) there are often Generic TWAIN drivers in these systems that might work with your scanner -- use "The Gimp" to import your TWAIN image - the Gimp is free (a Photoshop alternative) and is included with most Linux distros.

Before buying VUESCAN try the Linux solution if you don't want to create an XP VM - The generic TWAIN driver works for my Canon scanner (also ONLY XP --there weren't any 64 bit drivers for this either).

IT WORKS !!! (Opensuse 13.1 64 bit version ) -- Here's a list of supported devices on Linux -- try this before spending money. All FREE software.

SANE: Supported Devices

Here's the Scanned image (using XSANE -- Front end for the SANE system) OPENSUSE 13.1 X-64. Shoud work on Linux Mint and UBUNTU as well.

Epson should work too -- Cheap (Free) - easy and you keep your old nice photo scanner too. You can see my scanner CANONSCAN N1240

I can confirm that the "replace all instances of USB\VID_04B8&PID_011B with USB\VID_04B8&PID_010A" trick (described in the previous posts of this thread) works in Windows 10 too.

I'm using without problems the EPSON 1640 SU scanner (with the help of the Scanner app hosted in Windows store) in my Windows 10. Hope this helps.

I ran into a snag installing the driver in Win10 Build 161208. In this latest build, Microsoft is enforcing driver signing. And replacing the device id with USB\VID_04B8&PID_010A changes the driver hash. In short, the message you get trying to install the driver indicates that tampering has taken place. Ya think? Anyway, the fix is to disable driver signature enforcement long enough to install this driver and then re-enable it. A full description is here: How to Disable Driver Signature Verification on 64-Bit Windows 8 or 10 (So That You Can Install Unsigned Drivers) But the simple answer is to right-click on the Win10 Start button and select Command Prompt (Admin). At the prompt type: bcdedit /set testsigning on. Then reboot. Now you can install the modified Epson 2400 driver. Then open that Admin command prompt again and type: bcdedit /set testsigning off. Reboot again. You're done.
