What file system is it formatted in? It has to be NTFS for Windows 7 and file unit allocation size should be 4096bytes (or Standard).

What was on that volume before?

Have you tried Advanced options which let you format the drive during the installation?

Also, does it have a drive letter? It must have one allocated for the installer to see the drive.

    hi peter ,
the drive is formatted to nfts and has a drive letter . xp recognises it , so i might just install xp on it and the update with 7 over that , do you think that will work? thanks.

It may but no guarantees. That's strange. I'm going to have to Google this a lot more..!
