Problem: Windows 7 can't find LG DVD-RW driver

I've recently built a new computer and am trying to install Windows 7 on it (Professional 64-bit full version, acquired through MSDN-AA, burned on a DVD). The installation works for a few minutes but then it tells me that Windows can't find the driver for the DVD drive, an LG GH22NS50 DVD Writer, and prompts me to browse for it. The driver is supposed to be plug'n'play, so there's no CD and I can't find it online. I don't know how the installation has worked at all without the driver, but I seemingly can't get past this point without pointing Windows to a driver. Any idea how I might deal with this?

The machine is home-built so I got all of the parts separately. In case it's relevant, the main components are: Core i7 920 processor, MSI X58 Platinum mobo, 6GB DDR3 RAM, GeForce 250 GTS video card, 1TB Hitachi hard drive, LG GH22NS50 DVD Writer; only peripherals are a monitor, keyboard, and mouse.

Does the dvd not show up in device manager? (type device manager in search)

Is there any unknown devices?

Well, the OS isn't installed yet, so I don't think I can use device manager.

The exact error message I'm getting, which now occurs immediately when I press "Install Now":

"A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now."

But I don't have any of these, b/c the driver is supposed to be plug'n'play...

Pretty strange. I have two of those drives, and both installed and worked perfectly without needing any input from me.

Have you tried updating to your latest available BIOS and chipset drivers?

Also try setting your SATA interface to IDE if you have AHCI enabled (in BIOS).

Just had a thought. The first GH22NS50 I bought came with Firmware TN00. It had a little app in the firmware called "Bluebirds". Removing it requires a firmware update to TN01, available on LG's site.

This could be what is causing your problem. Could you put the drive in another system that already has windows or another OS, check the FW version and update it if necessary? Try again after that.

Let us know how things go.

I had an LG-RW and it worked great. I did a fresh install, and it worked great. Once it was up and running, I had no trouble burning CDs/DVDs. I even used the installed windows burning. I did have some other hardware that didn't work, but i just download the vista drivers from the manuf. site and they all worked fine. It's not much for advice, but it is my experience with 7.

This is a chipset driver issue. The workaround, in lieu of acquiring the updated F6* driver files, is to install from USB or partition.

* F6 is used here to identify the legacy driver install package
