ASUS HD5450 only works in PCIe 2.0 x1 slot, or driver install timeout

I'm using Windows 7 Professional 64bit with an ASUS P8H67-M PRO motherboard. I'm trying to install an ASUS HD5450 video card. I've tried both the drivers on the CD that came with the card and the latest version from ASUS's website.

When I use the CD, the error is "Driver Install: the installation failed." When I install the drivers via Device Manager, the error is "The operation returned because the timeout period expired." It takes about 15 minutes to attempt to install, during which time nothing is happening (according to Task Manager). The card does function with the "Video Controller (VGA Compatible)" drivers, but obviously not very well.

    [REDACTED. See below.]

My "Windows Experience Index" is now 3.9 instead of 6.5 with my onboard video. (I upgraded because the new card supports higher resolution.) I don't see any visual difference, perhaps because this computer is never used for gaming. Is this a problem?

    Thanks,
    PianoGuy

Yes, it attempts to install the drivers in the x16 slot. After about 15 minutes I get the "The operation returned because the timeout period expired." message.

Ya, don`t put it in the x1 slot, don`t even know how you got it to fit, but it doesn`t belong there.

Actually it fit perfectly in the 1x slot and the driver did install properly.

How should I install the driver when it's in the x16 slot?

The same way, the cards in the slot, you turn on the pc and you install the driver you downloaded.

Why aren`t you going to amd.com for the drivers ? It is a radeon card isn`t it ?

I'm sorry for providing bad information. I was looking at the wrong specifications. The slot that actually works is: PCIe 2.0 x16 (x4 mode)

The PCIe 2.0 x16 slot does not allow me to install the drivers.

Ya got me confused. A pci express slot is a pci express slot.

If this is your board, I only see 1 pci express x 16 slot

    http://www.asus.com/Motherboard/P7H55M_PRO/

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131623

Your card goes in the long, dark blue slot and nowhere else.

    The board has:
    1 x PCIe 2.0 x16 (blue)
    1 x PCIe 2.0 x16 (x4 mode, black)

The blue slot is closest to the CPU and is the one that does not work.
