why all these microsoft drivers on my system?

well a few months ago i did a clean install to get raid of all the bloatware that came with the system....based on advice from my good buddy gregrocker.

i'm very pleased with the result so far. the system feels lighter and faster and generally performing better.

after that install, i ended up with microsoft drivers for just about everything on the system.

when i bought this laptop....yes i bought it brand new....it didn't come with any installation discs. i created a factory backup on dvds and had them lying around without realising that a couple of them had gotten damaged including the disc with the drivers and apps.

anyway i've managed to search and download all the drivers except this chipset thing. oh yes, and the "HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GT30N" driver for the dvd device, which i just can't seem to find anywhere.

w7 comes pre-loaded with a lot of generic drivers. The HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GT30N Should run fine with a MS driver. I have a home built system with a LG and an ASUS optical drive and neither came with any drivers.
Do you recall these devices missing drivers before the reinstall? IS anything inoperative in any way?

It may help if you call Acer support to see if they can send you a drivers disk for your model. Dell did this for me once free of charge...on a used laptop I aquired.

Some drivers are built into the bios and some are built into to the cpu and some things don't take drivers. With all the checking you have done I recommend leaving things alone if your system is working properly.

My rule of thumb is only replace drivers or bios if those changes address a specific problem I'm having. Newer drivers or bios may do more harm than help if you don't need them.

If the drivers aren't fixing the missing drivers it could be an issue with the hardware . Intel 5 series the driver are the chipset .

no wonder i keep recommending this site to all my friends, truly.

look, vistaking i honestly don't think i can thank you enough for taking the time and the patience to go through this with me. well, thank you ok. very much.

i have learnt a couple of things from you along the way and i have your chipset installed.

britton30, layback b, we meet again and again accept my grattitude guys. thanks to all who responded.

i have read some positive and some negative posts from across the net about using microsoft drivers for devices. i guess this is the reason for my desperate hunt for drivers, but you guys have allayed my fears and i'm greatful for that.

i'll still like to know if it's possible to repaire a corrupt bios with the same version

It's possible but I'm not 100% sure the BIOS will fix the issue .

sandpd motherboard bios update methods are brand name and motherboard spacific. I would recommend getting and reading your motherboard manual.
I have update and down dated my bios with no problems but that doesn't mean my method will work on other motherboards.
That is why I don't post my methods and recommend using the manual.
