I can't answer all of these, but I seriously doubt Canon, or Nikon for that matter, actually switched that service. And let's not forget, all the other cameras worked, and the home systems worked.Edit: The service is: Windows Driver Foundation - User Mode Driver Framework
No need to go away, the more people we have looking at this the better. I would like to have the answers to the following questions:
#1 What is the default service start up for the service?
#2 What changed it from AUTOMATIC to *MANUAL?
#3 Why do some cameras start the service but the Canon's DO NOT?
#4 Are there security risks for the service?
#5 Can A/V software or viruses exploit the service?
* MANUAL = Start on demand for this service. We have also noted that it seems (no proof yet) that the install of IE10 and 2 or 3 reboots changes the setting from AUTOMATIC to MANUAL. We are trying to find a few machines that do not have IE10 on them to test this (fortunately or unfortunately all our machines have IE10 on them). -WS
Anyway I'm betting the issue was caused by an update.
