Win 7 64-bit: 1394 ohci system driver does not start  

Dell Precision T3500 – Win 7 SP1 64-bit
Recently I added a StarTech PCIe eSata Controller Card to my system (slot 1 PCIe x 4) to add 2 external eSata ports.

After reboot Win installed the drivers; I did not use the supplied CD for driver install. The manual said that CD is not needed for Win 7.

After reboot to finish installation of drivers, I discovered that none of my Firewire devices (a scanner and an external WD hard drive) were working, nor were they even listed in Device Manager.
Tried to reinstall / update the drivers but got the message that Windows could not install the drivers because the device could not be started (code 10).

Since I need these two 1394 devices, I physically removed the eSata card and restored the system to a point prior to when I last worked with the two devices (they were both working fine then). After restore, the 2 devices still do not work. I was able to “install” them in Device Manager as “Legacy hardware” but they both show with the yellow exclamation mark.
Updating driver results in the message that Windows was not able to install the driver because the device could not start.

After some sleuthing I noticed that my IEEE 1394 Bus Host Controller and LSI 1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller are not listed in Device Manager. Adding them as “Legacy hardware” does not work since Device manager does not list any hardware / driver options for that.

Opened MSCONFIG / System Information / Tools tab / System Information / Software Environment / System Drivers and find this (quote):
“Name: 1394ohci 1394 - Description: OHCI Compliant Host Controller - File: c:\windows\system32\drivers\1394ohci.sys - Type: Kernel Driver - Started: No - Start Mode: Manual - State: Stopped - Status: OK - Error Mode: Normal - Accept Pause: No - Accept Stop: No”

When I installed / removed the eSata card I did not touch the 1394 card.

What can I do do get my system to start the 1394ohci.sys driver?

Is it dependant on BIOS settings? I am asking because after (physical) removal of the eSata card the boot sequence of my BIOS had been changed. I had not touched it.
Can Windows change BIOS settings?

Problem solved. Something clicked in my mind ... I opened the case, checked the 1394 card and ... it was sitting loosely so that I could lift it without any tug. Seated the card firmly, and now everything works. My two 1394 devices are up-and-running.
The most simple thing ... and it bugged me for days.
