    Hello Tocapet,

    Welcome to the Seven Forums.

You should be able to use the Vista x64 driver. When you install you may have to use compatibility mode for Vista and Run as admin.

Driver here: HP LaserJet 1000 Printer - Download drivers and software - HP Business Support Center

Info on Compatibility mode here if needed. Compatibility Mode

Well, the page you directed me to came back with the following message:

"HP is committed to providing the best experience for HP products in the Windows Vista operating environment.
Today, a solution for your product is not available in Microsoft’s Windows Vista. Drivers will be posted as they are completed.
HP aspires to provide the most up-to-date information on HP drivers and software. Please check back for updates."
They just want to sell me a printer, I guess.

Okay, so I found a work-around to this problem. The bad part is you need a computer that's able to print to the laserjet on your network, but it works!

    Here're the basic steps:

    1. Install pdfCreator from PDFCreator | Get PDFCreator at SourceForge.net on your Windows 7 machine. This is a 'virtual printer' that turns anything you send to it into a PDF file. It appears as a regular printer in windows.
    2. Create a shared folder on the computer with the printer attached. I called mine 'Spool' and put it in my root directory.
    3. Open up PDFCreator and go to Printer --> Options --> Auto Save.
    4. Check the 'Use Auto-save' box. Select pdf as the format to use.
    5. Check the 'Use this directory for auto-save' box. Enter the shared folder on the other computer that you created in step 2.
    6. Close the pdfcreator properties window.
    7. Install Batch Doc Print from batch print pdf and doc files, print directory on the machine with the Laserjet 1000 attached.
    8. Open Batch Doc Print. Go to Tasks --> Watch Folder.
    9. Click 'Browse' and select the shared folder you created in step 2.
    10. Check the 'Monitor the folder when windows start up box.'
    11. Click 'Add' and then OK.

Now all you have to do is set PDFCreator to be your default printer on your Windows 7 machine and make sure your printer computer is turned on when you want to print! The only downside to this is that Batch Doc Print isn't free, so you have to click 'Try' every time your computer starts up. This doesn't limit it's functionality, so for me it's not a big deal.

    Use Modern PCL Drivers

I've found another way around this problem. HP makes the best, most reliable printers... they last a long time. However HP is notorious about not supporting those printers after they have replaced them in their product line. After trying vista, I never went there because there were NO vista drivers offered. Now that I am going Win7 64-bit I thought I was screwed.

I have a Laserjet 3330 multifunction printer from 2002 that is used at home and is still going very strong. It is installed on an HP print server attached to the network switch in my home office.

On the assumption that one HP PCL6 Laserjet is much like another... I tried installing an HP M3027/M3035 MFM PCL6 64-bitdriver from the RTM built-in diver list. To my surprise it worked flawlessly... even the manual duplex was supported the same way.

Unfortunately, the scan function still eludes me. The send a fax from your PC function I can live without.

I your case, look at other entry Laserjet printers. the LJ 1200 came after the 1100. I don't remember what replaced the 1200. But try today's entry Laserjets... P1006/P1006/P1505. You will need a driver to support the PCL5 or PCL6 function in the 1100.

    Try this strategy.

Interesting. But does this only work for an independant print server or a printer attached directly to your machine? Because I can't seem to install a different driver for a network printer attached to another machine. It always wants to install the driver from the other computer.

I don't know whether it works with the USB plugged directly into your PC. I do have a HP PhotoSmart 8250 installed on my XP SP3 PC and did try to see if the driver was in the RTM for the Win7 test system. It was and I installed it as a local printer with printer on LPT1 for now. All that means is that there is a 64-bit driver and it did install. I have not tested it on the printer.

My 3330 MFM is on the network. When I installed it as a M3027/M3035, I did it as a local printer but used an HP TCP/IP port on 192.168.1.110. I created the port as part of the install process.

The drivers in the RTM are the PCL or PS drivers that HP has on their website for most printers. They are not the "full boat" ones that equal the the ones that come on the CD. However, they do print and support all of the print functions of the printer. In the case of the 1100, their are no scan or fax features to worry about.

Breaking news... I just tried to add a printer and found a 1100 driver in the list on my RTM (7100) PC. I did use the "Windows Update" button under the list of printers. This is supposed to go out to MS and get all the latest drivers. Try this first. Maybe your problem has been solved.

I'll try, but I doubt it. HP stopped releasing new drivers for the 1000 after XP, and they never released 64-bit driver for it. I haven't seen anyone make it work on 64-bit OS other than the method I used. The problem is the host-based printer; if it had a processor this issue could be worked around.
