Installing new Nvidia drivers and it took a turn for the worst

My computer has been acting up lately but tonight has topped it. I was changing wallpapers on my desktop tonight and my desktop was locking up (not the first time it has done random lock ups but was fed up with it by now) so I though maybe its the graphics cards and went ahead and installed the newest drivers it was going smoothly until it started installing the new drivers both of my monitors went black (which always happens to me) but display did not come back at all. So I thought ok I will wait a few mins and it should come back, after about 5mins I hear this roaring fan noise coming form inside my computer which sounded like it was coming from my gtx 660 and gtx 550ti at this point nothing was responding. So I just went ahead and hard shut it down, I have not turned my desktop back on for fear of causing damage to anything. any help is greatly appreciated!

You`re not running them in SLI are you ?

I`m sure you`re not, but just had to ask.

Why do you have the 550 in the setup ?

How many monitors are you using ?

Nope no SLI. I am using 2 HP monitors, I have the 550ti for my second monitor (Used for looking at skype, twitch, facebook, twitter, etc while I'm gaming)

You run it how you want, but I see no reason to have the 550 in there.

I run 2 monitors off my 660 with no issues, ever. :)

1st thing you gotta do is find out what`s making the noise.

The only reason I have it in is because my 550ti I was just laying around not getting used so I said why not lol, but now idk if any of the cards inside my computer work

Could the noise be from the video card fan? Don't they run at a set speed when the drivers aren't installed.
I would try to reinstall the drivers (NVidia clean install) with only the 660 installed. If that card works fine, add the 550 and see if that also works.
I think it's just a corrupted driver install

I hope it is just the drivers, should I go through safe mode and clean everything out?

Was this new driver update designed for both cards?
Was this new driver installed on both cards?

I have never tried using mismatched cards so I have limited knowledge on how things work with this setup.
    I'm am curious.
I always wondered if someone run 2 matching cards one screen per card without sli would work.

I would remove the 550. You could use the IGPU from your I5 for your second monitor if you wanted to. As addram said, the 660 will run multiple monitors with ease. Less heat and power draw for you that way.
