It installs some driver. How can I stop it from doing that?

When I removed the drivers, and then plugged in the adapter, it would always fail. However, it seems like some drivers are still hanging around for you. What driver did it install?

Here's a link to Vista instructions on completely removing drivers.

It's the same process for 7.

I deleted the two drivers that it had listed, which were the same .sys files that you had on your driver. I went to the system32 folder deleted and rebooted the computer. Then I reconnected the device and this is the driver it installed:

This is one of the two drivers that I deleted from the system...

Alright, I did that. When I restarted the computer I plugged in the cable and it said no driver to install so I knew that I had done everything right. I then installed the vista driver again, but it says the same thing:

This device is not configured correctly. (Code 1)

The name is already in use as either a service name or a service display name.

To find a driver for this device, click Update Driver.

Ok, have you read this thread on the Microsoft Social website?

Prolific USB to Serial Problem

There's a link to a download in there that will hopefully help.

Where did you buy your cable? I don't suppose you could take your cable to a friend's computer that's running Vista? You might have a bad cable.

I am about to try your fix. I have tried it before, but not after I uninstalled the drivers cleanly. I know the cable works because I have another laptop (borrowed) with Vista 32-bit and it installed first try and connected to my plasma. I will post back in the next 30 minutes about this newer driver.

**Edit**

After a clean install, still doesn't work... :-( This is so depressing...

Do you have Windows Virtual PC installed? You could try using that along with XP, and then install the XP driver for the USB-DB9 adpater. Kind of convoluted, but it might work. I have to use Virtual PC in order to communicate with my Pronto TSU-2000 - ProntoEdit just doesn't like my 64 bit OS.

I have a XP load on Virtual PC version 6. I tried to download the RTM version of Virtual PC 2007 SP1 for Windows 7, but every time I launched it, it said incompatible version. I can't find USB support in the version I have.

Did you try the http://www.usglobalsat.com/download/546/win_drivers.zip drivers? I just went to my son's Windows 7 x86 machine and tried all of the standard drivers and nothing worked. I successfully installed the above drivers.

If you can't get this working, you can buy an Expresscard to Serial card from Newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16839328018

You won't make your Tuesday deadline, but it should work without all of these headaches.
