Dodgy Driver or Faulty Network Adapter
Hi All,
Background:
I spent a whole day re-installing windows 7 64-bit and configuring it plus adding my applications and then doing all the updates. The following day I spent re-partitioning my secondary HDD's so that I could have a partition solely for Steam and Origin (games totalling nearly a 1TB) and then copying them from their backup to the new partition. Everything was working just fine and I left Steam running updates on some of the games, however when I came back to see if the job had finished I discovered it had not, and in actual fact it didn't get much further than when I left it, but it appeared the connection was lost. Under closer examination it turned out that the device manager was indicating a driver or hardware fault with my Belkin N adapter and another device a USB Hub (actually a desk fan with a 4-port USB hub).
The problem:
(1) To solve this I initially thought it was the driver so I uninstalled the driver, restarted PC, installed latest driver but straight away it reported "Windows could not installed the device" (or whatever it says under a failed device installation). Tried a different USB port - same result.
(2) Next step try the older driver, same result.
(3) Noticing that my hub that was previously working is now not I thought it could be the intel chipset drivers that control the USB ports - however I already had the latest installed. Eventually I managed to over write the newer ones with the original drivers that came with my motherboard. Restarted PC and re-installed latest network adapter drivers but again failed to install correctly.
(4) Installed network adapter on laptop (OS: XP SP3 32-bit) with latest drivers - worked perfectly.
Side Note: originally in device manager the name of the adapter appeared but now it just says "Universal Serial Bus (USB) controller" which leads me to believe the adapters at fault yet it works under xp plus my usb hub went at the same time which tends to suggest the USB driver, however I have overwritten them.
Any advice on how to get my adapter/usb working?
