Yep Gav my headers were linked into the Icy Box card reader the 2.0 USB (x4) work perfectly but the 3.0 - zip.
I just can't fathom it John. On my old rig (ASUS M2A-VM motherboard) I added a Renesas USB 3.0 PCI-E card and to get that to work I had to uninstall the device, reboot and then reinstall the driver. It would never work from a cold boot without going through those steps. I just count myself lucky that I have six working USB 3.0 ports on my Haswell rig although I'm sure the pain I had to go through to get the front two working correctly threw up the ghost drive I have appearing now.

Have you tried any of the regular 2.0 ports ?

I have a old WD my book and is kind of funny when it comes to being plugged into ports

Also have you pushed the power button sometimes when it is plugged in it doesn't just come on you might have to manually get it started

double check the connection to the External it also could be loose even when it appears to be plugged in
