No usb devices will install drivers

Trouble shooting 101: You opened a thread "No usb devices will install". Technically that issue is revolved and the thread should be marked solved.

Members offered additional help on other issues presented in the feedback you provided. You don't have to take any advice offered. In the course of correcting an issue, many other issues are often resolved. The real trick is to stay focused on the issue in the thread (I'm guilty of sending you down the other hardware fix path).

Trust me, there are a lot of things other members are doing to help solve the issues on your machine, so don't feel alone in "having to manually do everything". There are some drivers you have to manually install (chipset, Ethernet,...)

I think you meant that you'd like to just plug in a USB device and have it recognized.

So the new information given is that your iPhone isn't recognized when plugged into a USB port.

Everyone has given you some useful information, please review those posts and provide a recap of what you have done or not done.

This seems to be a cached driver or another db issue. Storage USB are fine now - other USB devices not so good. Need to think on this a little more.

To help the thread I can mark it as solved if that suits everyone. All the information has been useful and very helpful, and I appreciate all the advice offered.
I think I will reinstall Windows so that Windows can once again detect any plugged in devices and automatically download the relevant driver. It would also get my webcam working again. Also, now that my computer detects my external hard drive I can easily backup my files, so that was a great help.
If anyone has any addition things for me to try, I will reply to any new posts. Otherwise, thanks to everyone for the help:)

2. In terms of automatic PC actions, you can consider installing a produce like Driver Detective - Driver Detective Free Download. The software/service is not free, but it might be what you are referring to in keeping your drivers functioning properly. Also, there are two links in my Signature - <PSI> and <Update Checker>. These are free and can help keep your system in a good condition.

3. In reinstalling Windows, there are no guarantees that you might not be back into this situation again. However, that is your call.

You should probably mark the thread unsolved. I was only explaining a "best world scenario"
One thread, one issue, one solution

Since you're still having USB issues, the thread isn't really solved.

If you want to re-install, that is your choice and it should definitely resolve the issues

If you haven't already done so, create your OEM Recovery Discs
See Create System Recovery Media (pg 12) in the XPS Setup Guide (PDF)

Read over these tutorials for the best install procedure:
Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7
Clean Install Windows 7

If a clean install is the path you're going to take, read the tutorials and ask any questions first.
They are well written and if you follow the steps it takes about an hour to install, then about 3-4 hours to run all of the Windows Updates and install your favorite software and copy your data back (copy so that you have a current backup)

I suggest that after you re-install, you slowly add you favorite software over time. You might find that you don't really use something that much, so you might decide not to install it on your brand new squeaky clean Windows.

Java is something people are doing without - you might have an application that requires it, but many machines run fine without Java. Also carefully choose your Antivirus program. If you have a paid version, you might as well run out it's license. But consider MS Essential Security, Avast!, and AVG -> all free, all good.

Make sure that you select the Free version not the free trial. Also be alert, during and after the install process, for sneakerware - many free applications are supported by cross marketing other things (add-ons, toolbars, browsers, etc.). If you are diligent and untick the checkboxes, you won't have to uninstall the extra baggage.
You want to install only the application you downloaded - not anything else the install package carries with it.
Typical baggage includes Chrome browser, Search toolbars, and browser add-ons - they're fairly easy to identify when you're installing Avast! or AVG and the dialog shows something ticked for Google

You can always decide to keep poking at this issue, but a clean install might be faster - your call.

I apologize again for the "thread solved" confusion. I'm normally more direct and say "When you're satisfied that the issue is resolved, please mark this thread closed". But you couldn't know that and I think my statement confused you.

Post what you decide to do and ask any questions about the tutorials if in doubt.

I'm happy to try a few other things (for my own learning and for others who might have the same issue). If you guys are ok with that, then I am too

. If it ends up being too difficult I will go ahead with the Windows reinstall.

I'll spend the next 2 or 3 days trying things myself, or following advice from here. If I find a solution I will certainly update the thread.

For me, you're the driver and you get to decided when you've poked enough things.

It's probably better if you stick with advice given on SF, rather than trying things on your own. It's just another thing about trouble shooting. One path, test it, next step, test it, fixed? Stop.

I don't have a solution at the moment, so sis tight, someone else might offer the answer. your ext drives are working, that's good.

computerGeek gave some good stuff in post# 50. Follow that and post the results. Each step yields more information and ComputerGeek seems to be on the ball.

Please provide the following information about your computer.

Open Control Panel -> Performance Information and Tools
Click on View and print detailed performance and system information
Underneath the base score
A new window opens: More details about my computer
Select all of the text in the window (Ctrl+A)
Copy the selected text (Ctrl+C)
Open your text editor and paste the copied text into a new file (Ctrl+V)
Save the text file as SysPerf.txt in your Documents folder
The name and location of the file can be anything you chose.

Attach the SysPerf.txt file to a new post on your thread.

I will just follow the advice from here, because my level of knowledge isn't high enough.

computerGeek gave some good stuff in post# 50. Follow that and post the results. Each step yields more information and ComputerGeek seems to be on the ball.

I will go back and do these steps and post the results. I just realised that I missed that post.

You have a Logitech USB Optical mouse. I would leave the touchpad drivers alone.

Do you have an SD card inserted in your card reader? If not, insert one. Does the SD Host and JMCR Other device entries disappear? If not, the right click each->Properties and tell me the Device Status code of each (I only need the code #)

Uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled iTunes. Connected my iPhone and my computer tries to download the driver from Windows Update (as far as I remember). Then this displays:

fyi... I'll be travelling Monday for 2 weeks. So my online time will vary... But let's see what we can do for a quick look now... It seems there's may be an issue with 3rd party installs

Open an elevated command prompt window. Type (or copy/paste)

Code:

pnputil -e > "C:\pnputil.txt"

Attach C:\pnputil.txt to next post

Let's next create trace file. If lucky, maybe I'll spot something.

Delete C:\WINDOWS\inf\setupapi.dev.log if it exists
Download attached file and unzip. Double click to run the Set Verbose.reg file. Allow the registry change. Reboot
Open DevMgr. Select the web cam under Other devices. Right click->Uninstall. Then from the top of DevMgr menu click Action->Scan for Hardware changes. Wait till it's done. (i.e. the device will re-appear probably still in Other devices)
Plug in your iPhone. Do the same (uninstall then scan for h/w change). When, do a right click Update Driver. Wait till it's done
Zip the C:\WINDOWS\inf\setupapi.dev.log and attach
Double click Set Default.reg Reboot

I'll have a look....

I got a bit restless one night and ended up doing a lot of things myself. I showed all the hidden devices in Device Manager and uninstalled all of them. Then I uninstalled all the visible devices in 'other devices' and 'universal serial bus controllers'. Then I deleted the 'INFCACHE.1' file and rebooted.
After rebooting I could access my USB flash drive and my SD card, but once Windows started to automatically download driver, both stopped working. Weird. It seemed like Windows overwrote the working drivers?
I wonder if that helps anybody to find a solution?

I've attached the file you requested, but please keep in mind I did it AFTER my tinkering

Anyway, I think I'm going to do a clean install in a day or two. It seems like it would be the quickest solution.
