No usb devices will install drivers

Thank you for letting us know your intent to reinstall Windows. I see no reason not to mark this thread as solved due to re-installation of Windows.

cleaning the Ghost drivers, other devices and USB devices is what should have worked (as well as cleaning up infcache.1)

I'm pretty sure that's what you said happened- things worked until...

Windows Update (WU) offered either a driver or a platform update (no specific WU information given). If you attach the Windows\Windowsupdate.txt that would narrow it down a bit.

I'm not certain that you won't have the same issue with a new install when WU applies an update. sometimes WU gives you the wrong driver... not often but sometimes.

I just want to be certain that you didn't apply any new software or drivers, only WU - yes?

Don't let me talk you out of a plan to reinstall if that's what you really want to do. I do know that there is one WU that affects USB and that KB was updated in Jan to fix issues it originally caused. I have to look up the KB, but I don't want to spend any time on it until I know that your want to continue look for a solution or do a re-install.

If you attach the Windowsupdate log, I'll assume that you want to try a few more things - maybe run it out to the end of the week.

Hmmm... Your USB drive problem has returned. (did usbstor.inf disappear again???) Plus you don't seem able to do 3rd party installs. Having both these problems also makes me consider malware.

Check if any group policies have been set on your computer. Open an elevated command prompt. Enter

Code:

gpresult /Scope User /v

Scroll down to Resultant Set Of Policies for User section. You'll see a list of categories. Does each category indicate N/A? Or do you see any restrictions? If so it could be the result of malware.

p.s. you could also do a gpresult /Scope User /v > C:\x.txt and attach x.txt if you want others to review it
