Hi, I have the same problem. I'm running Windows 7 RC x64 and have a CardMan 3121 reader. I installed the Vista x64 drivers for the reader which works fine, but driver for the smartcard itself fail to install. I've tried to disable the smartcard as described above, but it doesn't work anyway. The hardware ID of my card is as follows:

    SCFILTER\CID_0067114346495345105266ff819000

    Any tips?

    Brgds

    Card driver not found

There are several things you can check. First, make sure device auto update is enabled. Click Start, right click "Computer", select properties, click "Advanced system settings", click "Hardware" tab, click "Windows Update Driver Settings" button, make sure you select "Check for drivers automatically" and click "OK". Next, go to Windows Update and scan for updates and see if it finds the driver for the card this time.

Thanks for your answer. I've also tried the steps you describe, but without success.

Okay, I searched on Windows Update and was unable to find a driver for your Smartcard. This means you have to get this driver from whatever method you used to get it working in prior OS (usually from your IT department site). You will still see "unknown smart card" in device manager until the card manufacture puts their driver on WU. But as long as you manually find and install the card driver, it should work even though device manager still shows "unknown smart card".

    Problem Code : 0000001C

Are you sure this hardware ID is a Smartcard reader? Problem code 1C means it couldn't find a driver for it. Usually, Smartcard readers are either USB, PCMCIA or PCI, so the hardware ID will have the appropriate "prefix" but your prefix is ACPI which means it is BIOS enumerated. I have never seen a BIOS enumerated Smartcard reader before. Is it built-in to a laptop? If so, what is the laptop make/model?
Correct sir, it is on-board... its an Acer aspire 5670... the reader is made by TI

thanks by the way, i had all but forgotten about this thread while dealing with a few other issues.

I downloaded the user manual for the Aspire 5670 and do not see any built-in Smartcard reader. Are you sure it has one or is your Smartcard reader a PCMCIA or ExpressCard one?

    Hi again,

The problem is that pre Windows 7 there was no need for a driver for the smartcard, only for the reader. From what I understand it is a new feature of Windows 7, but I don't know what the use is.

I looked at the laptop spec, I still don't see Smartcard reader. 5n1 reader is a memory card reader, not a Smartcard reader. If the system failed to find a driver for the 5n1 memory card reader, your best bet is to go to Acer's support site and download the driver there.

My understanding is that Smartcard "mini-driver" is always required even pre Windows 7. It's just that the process of installing the "Smartcard mini-driver" was hidden by IT connection software installation. I assume you use your Smartcard to RAS-in to work. Prior to Windows 7, do you need to install some sort of RAS software? If so, that software includes the Smartcard mini-driver. It is not the Smartcard mini-driver that's new in Windows 7, it is the Smartcard PlugAndPlay that is the new feature in Windows 7. So in the past, you need to manually install the driver, now it automatically enumerates the Smartcard device and install a driver for it just like other devices so that it can also leverage Windows Update to download the driver (provided the driver is submitted to WU).
