    GeForce 9800GT on 64 bit Windows 7

    Hi guys,

I've recently put together a new machine; Asus P7P55D Pro, Intel i7 860, and 1Gb Palit 9800 GT. After installing the 64 bit version of Windows 7 Pro, I'm having tremendous issues getting the machine set up and getting graphics drivers correctly installed (I've been battling this for three days now, and it's getting tiresome).

The card functions correctly using the generic VGA drivers, it also functions correctly in another machine that runs 32 bit Vista Enterprise. The issue happens regardless of which of three PCI slots it is mounted in - so the card itself seems to be just fine. My power supply is more than adequate (600W) and appears to be in perfect working order.

When attempting to install a version of the Nvidia drivers, the machine will crash to the active cursor, whereupon it will have to be restarted. It will then fail to start and freeze at the windows load screen. Restarting prompts system repair, which does it's thing, complains about a driver issue, and allows windows to run - using the Nvidia driver. However it also prompts you to reinstall or update the display driver. The driver itself is not completely functional, for example, important things like the Nvidia Control Panel are entirely absent.

    I have tried quite a few things troubleshooting;

    1. I have tried installing the drivers in safe mode - this yields in the startup screen crash when trying to boot outside of safe mode.
    2. I have tried installing 182 and 185 drivers instead of the new 190s. These installers first refuse to install correctly complaining about system settings, then prompt you to re-run the installer with the correct configuration. Doing so has the installer refuse to install because my operating system is 'not XP-64, Vista 64 or Windows 7 64' - which it is. It then complains about the uninstaller being incorrect and that I'm trying to run the 32-bit version on a 64-bit machine.
    3. I used a driver sweeper to clean out the drivers completely, and installed again from anew. This allows me to install the drivers, but I still crash on the windows load screen.
    4. I have examined the manual for the motherboard, and the motherboard itself as well as the BIOS. I have not been able to find any possibly conflicting onboard device that can be disabled, either through the BIOS, jumpers or switches.
    5. I have updated the motherboard / chipset drivers to the latest versions, with no noticeable effect on my attempts to get graphics working.
    6. I have tried letting Windows Update automatically install my drivers, but this still yields the black screen and active cursor crash. I have tried installing the optional drivers that appear in Windows Update, which also yield the crash.
    7. I have attempted using the Device Manager to install the drivers, yielding the active cursor crash.
    8. I have flashed the BIOS and updated to AMI 0606, with no effect.
    9. I have attempted kitten sacrifice to the dark lord, with no effect.

Anyway, I'm all out of ideas and just can't get the 9800 GT up and running in 64-bit Windows 7 at all. I'm also not able to find the same issue reproduced by anyone online, let alone a solution.

    Anyone have any ideas?

Well, you have certainly run the whole gamut of attempts at fixing the problem. However, have you tried completely formatting the drive (with a bootable cd that writes zero's to every sector), re-installing, canceling out any attempts at installing generic drivers upon first boot, and then installing NVIDIA's latest drivers for your card? That would be my next move here (if you haven't already done so).

    Hi FLiGi7,

I have tried formatting and reinstalling - but I haven't tried to prevent Windows from installing generic drivers on first boot. Any suggestions on how to do that?

    Many thanks,

Well, on first boot it should not have any graphics drivers for your graphics card. Sometimes it attempts to install them if it thinks it has them, of which just cancel or X out of the process of attempting to do so. Then just make sure you have your nvidia driver installer on an accessible partition or usb stick and install them immediately for Windows gets the chance through auto update to try and find some for you.

And no luck what-so-ever. Still the same old crashing on the loading screen after rebooting after the driver is installed. I'm beginning to think there is no solution for this combination of parts. Gee, thanks 7.

Try removing 4GB of your ram out and reinstalling. 8GB might be an issue.

Their is a new BETA drive out 195.39 Now this is a BETA driver but has helped with the 8 series and for some reason some people have had a hard time with the 8 and 9 seires cards. So you could give it a shot. TechConnect Magazine - Nvidia delivers the OpenCL-ready GeForce 195.39 beta driver

Sounds pretty unlikely, but I might as well give it a shot.

Thanks, definitely give that a try. Hopefully I'll have more luck with these.

    Hi ambershee.

Ur not alone there. I have also 9800gt card and windows7x64. And I have problems to install correct nvidia drivers. My nvidia installation gets stuck in 1/4 way. And after waiting about 10min. it says that he is now completed and everything is fine, but he isnt. My problem is that I cant change TV-signal to PAL mode in windows7. The startmenu shows me the nvidia utilities, but they are not working at all. I need to start nvidia control panel in order to change my dual viewing properties.

Tryd to install control panel separately, but that didnt work.
I allready tryd to remove drivers with driver remover and reinstall, but no luck.
Tryd also these new beta drivers, but still no luck.

Seems to me that 9800gt cards with windows7 have major issues. So fix is needed either from microsoft or from nvidia.
