GeForce 9800GT on 64 bit Windows 7
Hi guys,
I've recently put together a new machine; Asus P7P55D Pro, Intel i7 860, and 1Gb Palit 9800 GT. After installing the 64 bit version of Windows 7 Pro, I'm having tremendous issues getting the machine set up and getting graphics drivers correctly installed (I've been battling this for three days now, and it's getting tiresome).
The card functions correctly using the generic VGA drivers, it also functions correctly in another machine that runs 32 bit Vista Enterprise. The issue happens regardless of which of three PCI slots it is mounted in - so the card itself seems to be just fine. My power supply is more than adequate (600W) and appears to be in perfect working order.
When attempting to install a version of the Nvidia drivers, the machine will crash to the active cursor, whereupon it will have to be restarted. It will then fail to start and freeze at the windows load screen. Restarting prompts system repair, which does it's thing, complains about a driver issue, and allows windows to run - using the Nvidia driver. However it also prompts you to reinstall or update the display driver. The driver itself is not completely functional, for example, important things like the Nvidia Control Panel are entirely absent.
I have tried quite a few things troubleshooting;
- I have tried installing the drivers in safe mode - this yields in the startup screen crash when trying to boot outside of safe mode.
- I have tried installing 182 and 185 drivers instead of the new 190s. These installers first refuse to install correctly complaining about system settings, then prompt you to re-run the installer with the correct configuration. Doing so has the installer refuse to install because my operating system is 'not XP-64, Vista 64 or Windows 7 64' - which it is. It then complains about the uninstaller being incorrect and that I'm trying to run the 32-bit version on a 64-bit machine.
- I used a driver sweeper to clean out the drivers completely, and installed again from anew. This allows me to install the drivers, but I still crash on the windows load screen.
- I have examined the manual for the motherboard, and the motherboard itself as well as the BIOS. I have not been able to find any possibly conflicting onboard device that can be disabled, either through the BIOS, jumpers or switches.
- I have updated the motherboard / chipset drivers to the latest versions, with no noticeable effect on my attempts to get graphics working.
- I have tried letting Windows Update automatically install my drivers, but this still yields the black screen and active cursor crash. I have tried installing the optional drivers that appear in Windows Update, which also yield the crash.
- I have attempted using the Device Manager to install the drivers, yielding the active cursor crash.
- I have flashed the BIOS and updated to AMI 0606, with no effect.
- I have attempted kitten sacrifice to the dark lord, with no effect.
Anyway, I'm all out of ideas and just can't get the 9800 GT up and running in 64-bit Windows 7 at all. I'm also not able to find the same issue reproduced by anyone online, let alone a solution.
Anyone have any ideas?
