    1. Use Windows Update, it will install the driver automatically
    2. Install driver add-on and software from canon website

that would be so great if that would happen. but it didn't. contacted canon too but they said they can't help?!? wtf?

so thought maybe someone came with the idea to avoid both problems.

Then you messed up your installation. Uninstall printer completely, activate Windows update to 'full automatic mode', and begin printer installation from scratch. Windows 7 has got a 64 bit driver for IP4200! I checked with Windows Update one minute ago.

I had this exact issue. It tried and failed to get drivers for the canon ip4200 from windows update.
However, the canon vista 64bit drives work fine it seems:

    Hope that helps

how did you get windows 7 update to get the drivers for this?? I've had windows update on for days and it hasn't downloaded a thing for my printer.

just go to printers, and scan for devices. and windows 7 will pick them up from their database. also if you connected it in device manager you'll prob. get an error for the device. just hit update driver and they will dl it.

    alternate driver

for me the windows drivers available were either ip3600 or ip4300, even after running windows update. the canon "add-on" moduile (add on to what?) had no effect. So I just installed my ip4200 using the ip4300 driver. so far it seems to work.

obviously it would be better if canon just posted a complete new driver for windows 7. Microsoft's win 7 compatibility website claims that the ip4200 is compatible, "no action required." for both 32 and 64-bit.
