Microsoft mouse and keyboard center won't install

After the latest Windows 7 update, when it tried to install an update for the mouse & keyboard center, it caused an error and wouldn't install. Then my mouse stopped working altogether. The mouse is a Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 3500. I tried installing a HP wi-fi mouse but something called SoftAp wasn't available, so I tried installing a brand new mouse (Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 4000) which also wanted me to install the mouse & keyboard center, but it will not install. It starts to, but always gives this error:

Setup must close because an error occurred. Verify that your computer
meets the system requirements on the product packaging. Restart your
computer and try running the Setup again. If this error happens again, see
Help for customer support options. (Error code 1603)
So now I am without a mouse and have to use the touchpad which I find very annoying to use! I need a real mouse. What do I do?

just a thought here; did you try right clicking on the setup icon if there is one and running it as administrator? Sometimes things wont install because they need elevated privileges to install. Its just the way windows is sometimes.

Thank you for answering. Yes, I tried that but with the same error result. I also restarted my computer but that didn't work. I'm tempted to get my husband to do a system restore but I've heard horror stories about that too.

If it was my computer I would do a system restore. I use it often and don't really have any problems with do it.

Also make sure you are using usb 2.0 and not 3.0.

Have you been to this page for your mouse?

    Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
I have one of the basic wired mouse from Microsoft and this mouse and keyboard center is a joke don't bother with the windows update wanting to install it,

So yes use system restore to an earlier time,
Once you see this windows update right click it and click on Hide,

All of your mouse and touchpad setting will be in Control panel and Mouse just as they were before,
Mouse and keyboard center is some dumbed down touch friendly crapware offered by Microsoft,

I made the mistake of loading it on a laptop and it wiped out all of my touchpad options
    Cheers.

Thank you guys. I did try that page that Layback Bear linked to, but it just wants me to download the Mouse & Keyboard Center. Whatever I try, that software wants to be installed. I'll get my husband to do the system restore and see what happens.

    Hi,
Yes your system spec's show you have a laptop so by all means necessary do not load this windows update

The warning I got was it was going to replace my mouse options,
What it didn't say it was going to remove my touchpad settings as well

I don't know why Microsoft is still offering this awful update for a really cheap mouse no telling what the keyboard options did I didn't have it long enough to see if the FN keys still worked or not
    Cheers.
