My little card didn't like the new driver,

At the present time I use 340.52 on both of my video cards
Msi 460 and Asus 770. Had the drivers for a month or so with no problems.

I got them form the Windows 7 Updates recommendations.

Any Nvidia drivers recommend by Windows Updates will not be the latest drivers that Nvidia has.
They will be the latest drivers that Nvidia and Microsoft have tested.
That is why the drivers Microsoft recommends come slower. Microsoft test them and makes sure they work with Windows 7.

I realized there's no point in using up to date drivers that haven't been officially listed on the Acer website. Whenever I tried using the latest drivers, the performance in games would be lower than the ones Acer offers, which is always an old version. So yeah, updating is not always a good idea unless you're already troubleshooting graphics related problems.
