Found generic reader for SD card in 19in 1multi reader AWOL

I have tried to download some pictures to my Dell Inspiron MT560 from an SD card, using the in-built multi card reader. The reader did not recognise the card and after several attempts I viewed the properties in Device Manager.
For some reason, although drivers for other cards appear, that for the SD card ( and MMC?) does not show at all, even in hidden devices! I am at a loss how that could be and how to rectify problem. Can anyone help please?
In case it is relevant here is info gathered. Generic Driver volume for the other card varieties is
6.1.7600.16385(win7_rtm.090713-1255) and specifically for the SD card USBSTOR\Disk&Ven_Generic-&Prod_SD/MMC&Rev_1.00\058F63626420&0

Embarrassment squared! My failing brain forgot System Restore.

Basic problem is still to be solved though: the card reader will not recognise the SD card. Hope you'll still help.

My solution is simply to forget about any built-in card reader.

Just get an inexpensive external USB card reader like this IOGear GFR304SD USB 3.0 reader with support for 59 different card formats. Supports pretty much everything there is.

There are lots of devices like this, and they're all very inexpensive.

I admit, looking through various posts on the subject Dell has not been very helpful,so you're probably right. I do have a reader but the plug is short and the reader gets fouled on the Dell casing. I have to use a USB extension; fiddly!
