Forget all that Windows DVD, device manager, properties, right clicking stuff. It's not going to install that way. The file you downloaded is a self extracting zip file. After it's downloaded, run it! It should start a Setup program and install the driver(s).

Here's what is in the zip file.

carwiz, I think he has tried that method as well. They why I suggested bit defender could be the issue but it was disabled. I guess defenderjim has the paid version of bit defender because the free version can not be disabled or I would be using it.

    Car wiz,

Yes, I have that same setup program and files. I have run it. Just like you say.

It says everything worked fine. But still can't scan. PS says that the twain folder is empty. Device manager thinks there are no drivers installed.

    Groze,

I happen to have bitdefender. I switched over a few weeks ago from avg. I have the free version of bd. I am able to disable it from the sys tray.

And yes, it is just as you say, I have tried the epson setup proggy many times. Always says it works. Never does any good.

Bit defender must of added a way to disable bit defender in the free version because the last version I tried didn't have that option. I will have to check it out again.

Does the scanner show up in the Source list of devices?

    Not under that "Scanner" section.

Only under the "Other" devices section.

Not device manager, in the program you're using to scan. You usually have to select the Source.

Also, run this SF Diagnostic program so we can get a look at the system. Be sure to "Run as Administrator" and use the Grab All button. Allow at least five minutes for all the steps to complete.

In PhotoShop -> Import, it does show "Epson Twain 5". Click that and I get:
    ---------------------------
    Twain_32
    ---------------------------
Could not open the TWAIN source. Make sure there is a valid source for your scanner in the TWAIN directory found in the Windows directory.
    ---------------------------
    OK
    ---------------------------
As far as the diag tool goes, it crashed. I would've included the crash report, but the dialog box wouldn't copy the text, and the screen shot was too big for the forum

I restarted, and it worked fine.

EPSON Scanner 010F USB\VID_04B8&PID_010F\5&26194A6F&0&4 The drivers for this device are not installed.

I though something new would jump out at me but I didn't see anything.

With all the troubleshooting done, i would suggest:
    - doing a virus/malware scan.
    - replace the USB cable use for connecting the scanner to the PC.
