Perhaps now is really that time to consider an upgrade when Win7 is actually released.

Not to mention hardware compatible with windows 7 isn't expensive unless you are looking for top of the line.

In the end you need to decide whats best for you. If you are happy just watching a DVD, then upgrading to windows 7 might not be the best choice unless you don't mind updating the hardware as well.

Although I agree backwards compatibility is a good thing, I am more concerned with them working on the current product rather then an older model.

Yes but MS doesn't officially support their older OS's now, let alone 3rd party hardware...
XP will be next to loose all support.
You cant really blame them. They are probably hoping the makers of old hardware would support their own customer bases.

I think they do what they can with the compatibility modes, but all future generation Windows would get very bloated if they had to officially support older version OS's and outdated hardware.

Well, I have run Windows XP on an old Pentium 233 before with 256MB of RAM. It ran decent and all the hardware was supported. This system is around 13 years old now.
Then comes Vista and Windows 7. No backwards support for XP drivers, it uses 5x as much space, and over 8x for memory. It can't even support my laptop that's 5 years old. Why?
It's mostly the video card drivers. If they could develop a DX7/8 emulation layer, that would be perfect. Even if you had to install it separately, that'd be fine with me.

Well its kind of like asking Chrysler to warranty or still stock parts for my 1972 Challenger...it would be nice but.
Just the way things go unfortunately.

    geforce2 mx mx 400

We have one machine w/ geforce2 mx mx 400 graphics card, same with us blue screen when I tried aero troubleshoot. I tried older drivers and the one I found most stable was 7X.XX xp.whql I still can't get aero to work, but it did work fine with Vista, which we ran previously on it. Could not get 8X.XX to install so I gave up. I wonder if there is much difference anyway. It's an old warhorse PC, don't care about aero too much, anyway. I am very pleased with windows 7 and we have been really pushing it hard on all our PC's, with just a few minor issues, very clever OS, good thing vista was beginning to make xp look better to me. :)

Microsoft Makes Windows 7 Minimum Requirements Official

I understand wanting to get Win7 working, but not meeting minimum requirements and then slagging on MS for it is ridiculous.
