Inquiry: How to Install Manually PnP/Generic USB Keyboard Driver?

How can I install manually a plug-and-play or generic USB keyboard driver in Windows 7 x64?

What are the name(s) and location of the driver file(s)?

    You should never need to.

    Windows does it by itself.

If there are no drivers at the website for the keyboard, then I would think it`s not necessary.

My keyboards have no drivers except the ones that Windows 7 provides when you install the keyboard. Both work as they should.

The device was not recognized by Windows.

I didn't find any Windows-7 drivers from the manufacturer (Gateway) of the device. (I prefer to use generic/PnP drivers, anyway.)

The keyboard is not installed logically (only physically via USB 2.0).

I understand. My keyboards are usb cable 2.0.
If the manufacture of the keyboard does not have drivers for the keyboard it was designed to use the ones that Windows 7 provides.

    Two things to try.

    1. Plug in the keyboard and boot and see if Windows 7 picks it up.

    2. Boot the computer and then plug in the keyboard and see if Windows 7 picks it up. Reboot and see if it is still recognized.

I have really never had problems with Windows 7 picking up keyboards from PS2 to my Das 4 Pro usb and vairious Microsoft wireless keyboards. I have had many keyboards and Windows 7 has always Plug and Played with generic drivers.

    What keyboard are you using?
Do other things work in the usb port you are using?
Do you use the usb 2.0 on the case or the one on the back of the computer off of the motherboard I/O panel?
Do you have another keyboard you could try?

That's what I'm trying to do.

    But, I don't know how.

I've located some files, but I don't know how to load them to the device.

    C:\Windows\System32\drivers\kbdclass.sys

    C:\Windows\System32\drivers\kdbhid.sys

The keyboard is a Gateway KB-0817 with a PS/2 interface cable that I am using with a (? passive) PS/2 to USB adapter:

TechCraft USB CPU to PS/2 Mouse Adapter [AUSB-PS2F-L] - $0.50 : Cable Sales USA, your computer cable and accessory online superstore!

I just realized that the adapter is labelled as a PS/2 mouse adapter that may not work with PS/2 keyboards. (Although, the adapter is not stopping Windows 7 from detecting input from the keys of the keyboard.)

Just go get another keyboard, if that keyboard does not install by itself then there`s only one place it belongs :)

    I'll keep that in mind.

However, the keyboard itself is probably not an issue.

But, the interface adapter probably is.

(I'm guessing that the keyboard EID data is not transmitting through to the PC.)

I'd still like to try a manual install of the .sys keyboard driver files, but have no experience doing so.

Also: I'm not sure which supplementary keyboard driver files to install - the PS/2 (i8042prt) driver file, or the "HID" (? USB) one (or neither).

    (Is this BSOD territory?)
