    I'm pretty sure I have all of the links you gave me downloaded and installed now and rebooted before I made the report, so hopefully it's accurate.

    Success! All the problem devices are gone and most of the others are recognized, the card reader isn't yet though,

    This is the only driver for that anyway,

    That downloaded and installed successfully but a few seconds after that my desktop said that I had two computers online with the same IP address, and suddenly I had no Internet access on either my desktop or my laptop.
    I uninstalled the card reader driver, rebooted both machines and my Internet access was back

    OK, sorry about that. Just see if your card reader works, windows update will probably have a driver anyway.

    Are there any symbols next to anything in device manager?
